Reasons why we don't need it:

If we are looking at it honestly during 90s and 2000s, except presenting new ideas and concepts, games have been striving to look better to have better graphics, physics and so on...Even Civilization games were striving to look better. Today we have mostly (there is still room for improvement of course, but slight compared to before) reached the maximum of how beautiful the games can look like. Many games today even after 3 years or so still look fantastic and look like they came out yesterday. Same is with Civ 5, after 3 years the game looks gorgeous, compared to other civs which after 3 years became relatively dated. So instead of moving to civ 6 wouldn't it be better to continue improving the game with expansions? Add more content? Since civ 6 will hardly be revolutionary as 5 was and upon release it definitely won't have as much content as civ 5.

Reasons why we need it:
The possibilities of new engine (and even better graphics ;)). Making some of the concepts of V better. Prehaps two unit per tile? Or something else? Improvement of AI, making it more complex and more intelligent. Combination of some systems from 4 and 5? Then bump Civ VI eventually through expansions and make it the pinnacle of Civilization series?

These are my two sides of the coin. This are just thoughts I am not sure which option I would pick. What do you think guys?

I'm confused by the poll. Do we need it ever? Or do we need it right now? Of course we need it eventually.

The more an addict 'needs' something, the less they should have it. I think Civ6 would negatively influence the habits of many people.

I'll certainly want it in 3 years but in the short period i don't feel it's needed. I would rather see a new expansion for civ5

I'd rather see 3rd Civ5 expansion, followed by AC 2. If I had to bet though I'd say Civ6 in 2015.

Meh, eventually I am sure yes but I fear it might start to bleed into the mobile platforms and dilute the Civ experience, maybe I will be wrong but temptation to water down future game to appeal to the mobile crowd will be too strong to ignore.

A future or fantasy setting would be awesome.

Mainly because it would open up more possibilities to design a much more vertical tech tree where choices actually mean something.

In CIV5, you eventually have to research everything because the game is tied to human history and tech advancements. That severely limits the customization of your civ and the way you play the game because the research path is set in stone, except for one or two choices (tech bottom or top first).

In a more vertical tech tree, opportunity costs are a lot higher and every choice has a larger impact on the gameplay.

They also should focus on making factions more diverse. Civs could be based on human, alien or beast races with different units, buildings etc.

Anyway, I'd certainly buy a conventional CIV6 release as well! ;)

Only if it brought something new. Eventually it will be nice to get an updated version of the game, but if it it is just more of the same (or rather less, since they need something to sell in expansions), then what is the rush?

My only wish is a nicely optimized engine that will run Hotseat smoothly without major issues, but retains most of the currently existing features (and moar)

A new game lets a developer have his own take on it rather than build off a previous developer. It lets you try to experiment and do something different while still knowing that there's an older version that's established if people don't like your change. I eventually would like to see them try their take on the new game. Also, as a practical matter, a new game can be sold for full price, which is eventually necessary to keep going as a gaming company.

As for when? 2016 is the 25th Anniversary of Civilization. That strikes me as a good target date for release.

No, do not ruin my historical Civ experience with some fantasy based futuristic game.

We don't need it. We don't need games. We don't need electricity or indoor plumbing. For milennia humans made due without it. Do I want Civ 6 in the foreseeable future ? Yes ! After years of patching and two expansions it has become a worthy successor, but there always things that can be improved or things that can be brought back.
I want my sliders back, I want larger maps and more cities, I want government choices that you can change like in Civ 4 or SMAC, I want random events etc. But I don't want to have to go back to Civ 4 for it because I also want to keep city states and policies.

I don't really miss sliders. I think they can come back if they can be done in an interesting way, but I don't find them at all necessary anymore (and I really only used them in Civ4 to min-max everything. Granted, if there's no tech trading, sliders become a bit more strategic). Government choices would be nice, although I'm not sure a Civ4 civics system and a Civ5 social policy system are mutually exclusive. I don't want random events back (that's the only one I truly disagree on).

Everyone will have a different idea of what Civ6 will be. I think if Civ6 is Civ5 or Civ4, it's not worth doing.

Did I truly asked the question so cryptically? No need to start saying how we don't need anything in our lives (See I can play with words as well ;)). Besides I thought that in my first comment it was clear on what the question was. If you really want so many sliders and random events you can always play some Paradox's game.

PS Wouldn't life be boring if the only things we do is search for food and water? ;)

IV was great at the time, but V's presentation is much nicer. They can do it again with VI, though I'm personally in no rush at all for VI to come out.

I'm sure the game design will be somewhat different, but another big thing is just how it looks. VI could introduce a cosmetic day-night cycle, bring back the globe view (which would look much nicer than IV's did), have more convincing city models (not that V's are bad), and also get more little things right that they probably won't bother with in V, such as skin colours, better combat animation, etc.

If it's anything like V was to IV, I'll be playing V for a while after VI comes out until they fix it up.

The company probably makes more money from selling a full game than from dlcs, and we'll lose interest at some point in playing this version - some issues i find minor now will become a show stopper later, inevitably.

Besides, there are ways to improve and change some things in the game - everybody would love better AI.
A city could use a resource farther than 3 hexes if it connects it by a road.
Armies in a hex could contain different unit types, in various numbers (4 warriors, 2 archers...)...they would move and fight together as an army (one icon).
