Washington took one of my city-states last night. I was rolling along and could do a diplomatic win easy. Or maybe a scientific win.

Instead I got into a war with Washington to get that city-state back. I just wanted it on the map, didn't particularly need it.

No calculated strategy here. I was P.O.'d that Washington would do this and wanted to fix it.

Personally - Yes. I realized recently that I don't much care about formally "winning" the game, I just really enjoy filling out the Piety tree and then setting up my nation as a super-power. If I survive that far, then I just spend a lot of the rest of the game dismantling any challengers to my supremacy... and maybe winning if I get bored.

This probably makes me a bit of a weirdo, but I find it a lot more fun :mischief:

I was backstabbed by Gandhi, twice. After that I went after him to take him out. A terrible war with, sure, Gandhi out of the game, my army in the wrong place with a bunch of crap city with resources I actually didn't need.

But it felt good :)

I usually end up putting a beating on bismarck just for fun. He always causes aggravation early in the game.

If I see the Ottomans or the Greeks on the map, I go and murder them out of spite for all the times they backstabbed me no matter the VC I'm going for.

Aren't the AI pretty much all the same? Don't they all backstab?

That's one of my frustrations with this game. I think it would be so much better if the different leaders actually acted different.

Yeah I was playing a science victory with England on a archipelo ANd spain was my enemy she constantly was trolling me so at the industrial era I nuked her and killed her off proparly nod needed but hey

In the game I am playing right now I got annoyed by the romans that kept declaring war and then retreating so I decided to march my whole army up to his towns and crush his army as a lesson. Next thing I know the greeks declared on me and marched up to my capital. I said to hell with my capital and kept attacking the romans. By the time I decimated the roman army the greeks took my captial and it was reduced to 2 pop. Lost my capital but seeing Julius beg for his life and offer everything he had in return made me smile. I did get my captial back, got some explaining to do with the residents:lol:.

Rushing the Great Wall with the Liberty GE, and then having runaway Greece DOW you. Let's see your hoplites and comp cav come try take my unassailable position, Alex!

In the game when I first won on prince, I got backstabbed by Agustus. He attacked and came pretty close to getting on of my cities, but I struck a peace deal with him.Later on, he attacked the Persians, whom I kinda liked, and I declared war on him and took some of his cities.

In that same game, I was policing the continent from aggressors but still won a space race victory.

I always do something because I want to. The game is too easy to "win" that without making it difficult for yourself you basically have to make your own entertainment. Switch stuff around, do crazy things.

Sadly I'm playing Civ 4 instead atm. This should not have happened.

In my last culture win I was expanding so quickly that I ended up almost surrounding Kuala-Lumpur within my borders. At the end when my borders stopped growing I took a couple of great artists and culture bombed around the city state so that they were completely enveloped in my border.

I took a screenshot because it looked so bizzare.:p

Doing things just because they amuse me at that moment is the only way I've ever played Civ or any other game lol.

Cathy. For me, it's Cathy. I almost *always* murder her. Because no matter what I do, no matter who or how I play, she constantly gobbles up a good 2/3rds of her continent (damn krepost, doesn't she know that's *my* continent?) and then DoWs me.

~R~

Normally I play defensively, going for science or culture wins. But one game Ghandi was my neighbor and irratated me so bad, I destroyed and razed every one of his cities. It ultimately cost me the game, but I didn't care. I killed every last person in his civ and was happy about it.

I do things just becasue I want to all the time. It's a game and my #1 priority is to have fun. Although part of having fun is winning, so I am also strategic.

I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but it was fun and you should all do it at least once: determine up front what kind of "nonviolent" victory you will pursue. Then, play as "peacefully" as this game will allow; which is to say, don't DOC just to conquer.
But, here's the gimmick: consider yourself the world "peacekeeper" and vow that NO NATION will be eliminated. That means, when another nation is being devoured by an AI (or even gets conquered completely), you have to "restore" him to maintain the balance. If you can, go to war to recover his cities (all or some) before he is wiped out. If not, then when you can, go restore his capital (which will bring him back into the game) and then get a couple more cities back for him. Do this will all nations.
If a nation gets too big, prune him back a bit (keep the cities or raze them, or even give them to a less fortunate civ).
The point here is: restore and/or maintain balance as you go on to win some victory other than domination.
In my games (when I play this way) I'll even gift units to some nations to help them resist a stronger enemy. That can take some maneuvering (diplomatically) so you can get open borders with them first.
Great fun and significantly more challenging.

Haha, I did that with Napolean to Washington one game. I took all his secondary cities, and then kept culture bombing Washington until only the city was left. All the time watching the pop drop. :goodjob:

I love DOWing everyone (CS's included) 3 turns before I will win the game. It's so hilarious:king::lol:!
