Do you guys name your cities?

Well the game should give you an icon and you can click on it to go to the thing they are talking about. Also, there should be a red blinking dot on the mini map for where they are talking about. But your idea still is a good one.

And DNK: Attaboy I am from Iowa!

Any event (e.g. enemy spotted near . . ., your worker has been destroyed by . . ., the borders of The Mumbles have expanded) should produce a circular icon, usually at the edge of the screen because the event took place off screen, which you won't have time to click on before it disappears. So open the Event Log (tiny icon at upper left of main screen) and then click on the event text in the log: the map shifts so that the location of the event is centred on the screen.

Yeah he now understands that but once that circle appears it is too late to do anything about it. To answer his question, no there is no way to do anything except notice that they are about to do something.

Ugh I hate peopel that name their first city but then don't name any other city. What the hell was the point in naming your first city then?

With most civs I cant be asked, but when I'm playing Incas and Aztecs I always rename the cities. I mean, how is one supposed to remember which is Ayopotzalco and which Coaxaxtlaxla (or watever)?

Always. I can't remember which is which otherwise. I also give each one a "class" as part of the name.

London was called Londinium in Roman times I think.

Most of the time I stick with the names supplied, but sometimes I like to name the cities with words ending in City.

City Names

Fed up with those boring old city names, I have devised a system that is simplicity itself, or far from it. The general idea is to name each city with a word that ends in city, e.g. Simpli-city.

This was quite a task in Civ II as I used to build many more cities, but Civ IV is much easier.

For added fun, you can try to name each city with a word that hopes to describe an aspect of that city or its fat cross.

If a city has stopped growing, you can rename it Capacity.

If there are no resources then it would be Scarcity.

If there is a lot of fallout it would be Toxicty.

If a city is hanging on despite numerous attacks it would be Tenacity.

Your major unit builder could be Ferocity, your production city Efficacity, your science city Sagacity, or Perspicacity

If you’re really lucky you’ll find one you can name Salacity.

If your struggling for options then head with great velocity for a dictionary to check the Authenticity of your ideas. For all those Civ fanatics, don’t play too long or you might upset the Felicity of your Domesticity, causing Firaxis adverse Publicity. And you would have used too much Electricity.

Have fun, there are many more.

I always name them. I use my wifes name in several different versions and/or her name, my name or our kids name.
Often also in a two word combo, so I do Fineisen for a city located near iron resources.
Or something on a hill would be Jasshügel (Jasshill).
Thus I usally can keep track of my cities.

On the other hand, I dont rename the cities I conquer, since I actually didnt build them and dont think I could remember them after besieging them for several turns with the name they had then.

I always name them. My capital gets the name it has automatically, so Berlin, Paris or Moscow. Then if I build something south of Berlin I'll name it Leipzig, northern harbours are named Hamburg or Kiel and a city in the east, close to an opponent will be named Konigsburg. I always name them geographically.
Sometimes it is near to impossible, because Berlin is at some western coast, but then I still give harbours names like Wilhemshaven or Hamburg.

Also, often when I conquer a neighbour I rename their cities to a neighbouring country IRL. So if I play Germany and I am conquering a northern neighbour, then all their cities get a Danish name.

Yup, I usually name them, just as i have the idiosyncracy of renaming my civ and leader to suit my cultural pride... (For Filipinos out there: Lakas Lawin of the Dakilan San'Lahi - my first city is usually named 'Tungkung Langit')

it helps me also to think of some nifty city names i could use in a story sometime in the future...

I name my capital "City 10" as it is the first city in the first region (usually half a continent). So, my city list will look something like:

City 10
City 11
City 20 (different region)
City 12
[etc]

I was really inspired by City 17 of HL2.

haha :)

I like having original names, reminds me of who the previous owner was. Thanks for that lovely specialist city Kyoto, Tokugawa ;)

Now this is clever. What about endings in "ton", too?

By the way, Iowa, perfect GP farm, no?

I use the greek alphabet

Alpha, Beta,.....

I place the conqured cities in order when they fall.

When I play a single player game, I usually let the game name the cities (Unless I'm playing Polynesian using a mod, I rename the Civ to Hawaiian or Samoan depending on the Leader I'm playing and then, if playing Hawaiian, rename the cities to actual Hawaiian city names.)

If I'm playing a LAN game with my husband, we like to name our cities after each other, family members, prophets and holy cities.

When I take over the New World in the 'Terra' map I name my cities, but otherwise, let the AI.

@ferenginar: That is one of the most awesome city naming strategies I've heard of. :goodjob:

I name my cities things from other games that I like, ex, my capital city is usually Teramia (from legend of zelda majora's mask)

In MP I've been known to rename cities, but not in SP where no one else can bask in my wittyness.
