Do you have a Empire thats connected on land or is it overseas? I usually go for the empires being on the same land. If i knew had to take a screenshot i could show you all my Austrian Empire. Also do you have a hughe empire with many cities or a small empire with only a few cities. Also if any one wants to post their screen shots that would be cool.

I have had extensive over seas empires. I always expand as fast as I can on my "Home" Land. If have have successfully developed that, then I just to free overseas towns. In my last game, I had gobbled up free land 2 neighboring Islands as well as the Homeland. By the time the game was over, these were worthwhile, fully functional cities.

absolutely

not sure why this is even a question - particularly for arch maps

sorry not trying to be a smarty :(

since I normally go for conquest victory - I always have to deal with overseas holdings

effective combinations of improvements, FP, Secret HQ can make these holdings very effective

There are innumerial screen shots in the SG forum, just pick one and page through it.

There is also a run down topped to explain the process of posting screens.

thats all right. When i play the Dutch or the English i often have over sea empires. When i am Austria, Greeks, Rome, i usually have land empire.

Absolutely, I always have overseas posessions. In games where I'm aiming for a military or space win, I don't even bother playing nice. If there are luxuries on other continents I need, (and don't belong to anyone that's too strong) I take them.

Unless a proper arch, my overseas empire is usually limited to a few cities right by a resource I need. They are usually stuffed full of units, culture buildings, barracks and a wall.

Domination victory means 66% of the world population and 66% of the world's territories.

To satisfy this victory condition you don't need to get 40% on your own land and 26% overseas or whatever. It's 66% flat. So it doesn't matter one bit whether the holdings are on homeland or overseas.

It really depends on the map, where resources/luxs are, who's powerful and so on.

Overseas holdings are hard to defend so I prefer to populate my own landmass first and also clean it out of any unwanted civs. This means an easily defendable contintent is secured with no prospect of headaches for later intercontinental invasions.

However if required resources or luxs are on another continent I will not hesitate to stick loads of guys in boats to start a division of my empire there. Although I will settle and establish myself overseas in say the Middle Ages I generally find myself waiting for flight (airports) before I launch full on continental invasions. I'll set up foot holds during the M.Ages before that though so I've got airports to land troops in when it comes to wiping them out.
