I always use grids...I find them VERY useful. Not only do they decrease the odds that you will mis-calculate the number of moves to a certain point (especially at sea!!), but they make it easier for me to determine city placement.

Grids are especially useful when you want to CTRL-Z to zoom out and see a bigger slice of the world. It helps keep the perspective.

I use grids frequently, turning them on when needed and off when not needed. I find them useful particularly when placing new cities and when moving naval units.

As a funny aside, I noticed recently that there was an isometric grid of little round fingerprints all around the center of my screen. At first I couldn't figure out why the pattern was so regular but then I realized - I'd been counting off sqaures for city placement by tapping on the screen. :crazyeye:

I use them all the time. Actually, I can't play without them. That brings me to something: why is it that we can't put the grid on by default? Every time I load a game I have to put the grid back on (but in the preferences, I can set the other stuff (like animations) off and that stuff stays the same when I quit and come back to my game.)

I used to use grids alot when I was getting used to the look of the terrain. Now, hardly ever. I play with shields and food bits visible so this removes the need for grids on land. At sea you might still need to double check if you were trying to coordinate movement or something...

I use them for mapping out my cities, or when moving units in jungle where i is easy to miss-move. Also have them on on my Laptop (hate TFTs thea start going dark).......

Once I found out there was an in-game grid, I never played without it. Still do. The first thing I do each time I load a game, before ANYTHING else, is press Ctrl+G. :)

Yeah, I was wondering about that as well - man, do I hate having to turn them on every time I load up the game. I could suggest that to Firaxis...

Wasn't there a recent post/poll on this? :)

anyway, I use grids. Otherwise, I can't tell where I'm going. I also use them for city layouts.

No. The grid reminds me of work. Spending too much time on spreadsheets already.
