With my typical western American mentality, I went in with guns blazing.
The main reason we don't want the poles in, is that they get the german horses. If germany conquers 1-2 of their cities in the right spot, they suddenly have knights, and we suddenly have jack under squat. I think the french stacks will help delay the germans and eventually let us move the stack of ~20 riders in through their territory. Key thing to note is that we have a noticable lack of spears in our empire. A lot of warriors, which became swords, which became dead, and now a plethora of riders.

So for style points is Wurzburg's capture for Doc a go?

Double Whip the Temples in Rus and Balatonboglar as after the flip of Sofia I fear the loss of another cultureless town to Bulgarians or Turks.

Do a little city management in the towns of Buda, Miskilc, Szeged and Pitesti to get uncorrupted shields where they will do the most good; queue up spearmen in Belgorod to stiffen western garrisons; whip temple in Pitesti (contentment and cultural pressure issues). Reassign citizens to reduce wasted spt and gpt in nothern towns. Net result wastes fewer shields and gets gpt up to 30.

Will cost 42gold to open embassy with the Poles, so need to wait at least one turn.

Hope the Frankish alliance will draw Otto's advancing troops to the west.

First target of healed riders will be Salzburg's iron and wines

We can buy contact with the Fatimids for 1gpt and 23g from our friends the Franks and hope to boost the treasury with a tech sale or two.

There are Celtic warriors moving into the region.
Bulgar sword finishes off German spear at Vidin.
Germans send an archer against Frankfurt's elite spear and spear slays archer.
German archer attacks elite rider force moving against Hamburg and the Hamburg's Bane battalion is formed and MGL Geza appears who hustles off to Miskilc to form another army. Two vet riders are added to army which moves out to cover Hamburgs' Bane from advancing Germans crusaders.

Riders press the attack at Hamburg and a rider is lost to a spear, another rider wounds elite spear in garrison but retreats. The elite spear is the strongest defender showing, so continue to press the attack. Vet sword kills spear, is unijured but fails to promote. Next defender showing is wounded crusader. Vet rider promotes to leite killing wounded crusader. Next defender showing is wounded spear. Vet rider attacks, spear is killed, the city is ours with 20g and three slaves.

Four German crusaders (three healthy, one wounded) counter attack at Miskolc and destroy the army and Hamburg's Bane though three crusaders die.

T7 1080

Army and elite riders move deeper into Germany.

Reinforce the garrison at Pecs against two Celtic warriors. Whip a swordsman at Debrecen and shift garrison spear from Kassa to prevent disorder at Debrecen

Found Biatorbagy 1SW of Plovdiv site.

Germany's Destruction moves further into German pillaging and discovers that Wurzburg has fallen to Frankish knights.

Elite rider captures Celtic settler at Hamburg but is crippled by Celtic uber spear.

T10 1089
Attack at Strasbourg fails though four German defenders(three spears and a Crusader) are killed and we take no losses, but heavy casualties. The army is driven back by German spears.

Moving forces toward Hamburg to attack at Salzburg.

We remain ahead by VP though Byzantines are gaining. There a few turns remaining on Frankish alliance so even though Germany will make peace and give Castle Building, we can wait.

Germany's Destruction is exposed though covered and Regensburg is threatened by Frankish knights and Burgundian MDI's so a counteratack on us is not a big fear. Best move at this point is to get army and supporting riders into cover of mountains and make their way back towards Salzbrg to support troops coming from Hamburg. If we can get Salzburg then the German threat is eliminated, though Burgundy adn the Franks might beat us to it.

I lost an army to the determined Germans but I figured that four Crusaders would not attack an two unit army and an elite rider, boy was I ever wrong. We ended up trading units and their crusader escaped into the woods.

Unfortunately, Rider Armies are only a 4.1.3 unit; if we'd be able to get the HRE, we could get them to 5.1.3.

Will try to get some German remnants...maybe I can squeeze CB from the Celts, and get something more expensive from Otto?


And nevermind with Würzburg being Frankish, that's the way it should be (Frankish, not French). It's the historical - but inofficial - capital of the German region 'Franken'

2. Germany crumpled quickly. We should get Salzburg and possibly Regensburg.
3. The Byz tech tree will allow 2 fers. The Rus and the Bulgars are lacking Heavy Cav.
4. We could just plow into the Bulgars as soon as the German situation improves.

Those were some very solid turns Bede. Lets keep up the pressure.

We can afford those techs as soon as 2 AI Civs know them; @2nd, they#'re pretty expensive

Agree in general, though we should have a Govenement first...

We’re extremely poor, and the only way to get Techs seems the pointy stick. We’ve hurt the Germans enough to get something more expensive than CB from them; need to find a way to get CB before peace.
Judging from the borders, France already captured Naumburg; that means, only 2 German Kings left. I don’t think Strassburg will hold for long, so we should try to get Salzburg while Regensburg is under siege. I won’t sign any MAs against Cordova, but they’re at war with France, so their units cannot reach us.

Enter.
Too bad, the turn order is Burg –Franks –Germany, so their troops are fully healed when we’re up. And of course the German Archers choose to attack us (but we defeat them). Germans start Bayeux the umpteenth time. We’re not among the 8 most powerful.
Norse Traditions comes in.

Turn 1: 1092AD
Cannot attack the Cordovans, we have a peace treaty for three more turns. At least, we could buy Seafaring for all our economy. Turning all 8 Taxman to Scientists nets us CB in 10.

Take the chance and capture Strassburg. Capture Salzburg, only 2 Spears there. Hm, our alliance with France lasts 7 more turns, I don’t think the Germans will live that long…

Too bad, the Celts were the only ones where we at least were close for CB. Wait, we can get CB from the Turks for Quarry and TM. And we’re drowning in unit support, we have 35 Riders – we must get out of Despotism. Either Germany lives 4 more turns, or not; nothing we can do about. Start some Aquaducts and Colosseum (Quarry!), and make the deal. Revolt.

Turn 7: 1110AD
Since the Rus know it now (flavor techs get ridiciously cheap @3rd), I can buy Heavy Cavalry from Cleo for WM, 124gp and 9gpt (about a third of our citizens are Taxman anyway), and trade it Bulgars for CoL, Early Siege and 1gp. And we would get MM and Med Combat from Germans for peace! 3 more turns…

All Frankish troops march North – guess Bremen or Hildesheim flipped back.

Turn 8: 1113AD
Have to run alternating riot cycles, to prevent too much starvation. Good thing is, we have so many Workers, we can irrigate everything in no time.
IBT: Franks show up and want a MA against Castile – and they pay us 279gp and 6gpt for it! Of course, Joannie Babe! And this despite they’re outnumbering us…
Franks and Byzantines sign against Abbassids, so do Danes, Poles and Byz; the interesting part is that Byz are at war with Abbassids.
Germans are still around, and – start Bayeux :rotfl:

We’re drowning in money. Nothing but a Spear and Cat next to Regensburg!

Turn 10: 1119AD
Our MA with Franks against Germany ends! We still have a RoP, and because of the MA against Castile, she is still gracious.
Peace for Germany for MM, Med Combat, a Worker and WM; we have to throw in 110gp –but hey, it’s a complete WM! I was right, Bremen must have flipped back.
MM to Danes for Seafaring, WM and 155gp. Early Siege to Norway for Smithing and WM.
No Civ is in the 3rd era so far. Byz are up DoE and IntOp, but we can wait until the price drops.

Ok. We have 547gp on the bank; I think we mostly need Markets, but I just started researching. If urgent need for Pikes arises, feel free to switch, no beakers lost. We have the score lead with 8040, Byz at 6515.
The stack with the Army near Strassburg should move away to open the road; we still have a RoP with France, and it would be nice if they finish off the Germans. Move most the Riders out of Salzburg ASAP, the flip risk is huge. Just decide where they should go. And have an eye on that Rus Berserks; he’s on escort duty, but those guys cannot be trusted!
Next target? 5 turns of revolution left; I’d say build up Infra, then MDIs and Cats, and go for the Bulgars again, and then Byzantines. However, we may need to fight the Rus. We have an empty Army in the capital – an Army of 3 MDIs is a 6.3.2 unit, don’t even think about mixing in a Sword.
We have deals with Germany, France and Turks, and Cordova won’t talk.
Don’t switch Colossei and Aquaducts without need, we have no Quarry! And don’t forget the map hawking, we still get gp here.

An excellent turn of warfare from Bede, and a solid turn of diplomacy, and voila! – we’re a soon-to-be Monarchy, and only one single Civ is up a visible Tech on us :D .

And, IIRC, we have not spent a shield on monumental buildings. There is something hugely satisfying about that.

I was wondering but just answered my own question: you left Regensburg for the Franks so as not to cause disharmony with the big horse to the west.

Consider the Rus if we feel a need to fight somebody. They are pushing at us from NE, 'zerks are tough on offense, terrible on defense unless stacked with something heavier than a spear, so it's relatively easy to pick them apart with fast units, they are expensive so the VP value is pretty good if you can kill enough of them, we have no coastline they can reach so their amphibious attack is not a worry, and Rurik is a nekulturny Ruffian.
 
Re: Regensburg
T'was no act of generosity; we needed peace with Germany to get the Techs, and their last King is in Regensburg. Naumburg fell long ago, and when I took Strassburg, it was defended by a single Spear; if I hadn't taken it, Burgundy would have gotten it for sure.

If the Franks fail, attack Regensburg again in 20 turns. And, me thinks, Salzburg as well (cannot imagine it won't flip :rolleyes: )

I think we need to :hammer: Byzantium sooner or later, to prevent them from winning. Thus I prefer to have 2 strong Civs to our East, for balance of powers.
 
I agree with Doc. We will need everyone we can to MA against the Byzantines. When we war on the Bulgars we should have a settler or two ready and secure the Bulgar iron. The Byz iron is a hop skip and a short jump from the bulgar borders. Some judicious pillaging and their ability to produce offense dissapears. That and if we get the Norse involved, their longboats can actually kill a few dromons for us. Just a thought.

Preturn: Pick up 5 GPT and 50-odd gold selling maps around. The middle class looks like a good choice to me; markets will give our economy a shot in the arm, and we can likely trade for Polearms, ect.

IBT: The Poles want an MA vs. the Abassids, no thanks ol' buddy. Otto kicks out our army trying to return from strasbourg out; they teleport into the territory of our main empire anyway. Thanks for shaving a few turns off our travel time, buddy.

The french are actually using a catapult to bombard Regensberg. Not something you see every day.

Turn 1: Troops continue migrating towards the bulgars. Workers work.

IBT: Ruse flips to the Bulgars :mad:

Turn 2: Sign a peace treaty with Cordova, they give us ten gold and their map. Divine Right is now known by most nations. The Abasssids, however, also know Polearms. I will try and arrange a 2-fer; but I cannot afford the purchase price yet. Will check again once anarchy ends.

IBT: The swedes, suprisingly enough, finish the Bayeux Tapestry in their capital.

Turn 3: Usual.

IBT: The French build the Knights Templar

Turn 4: One more turn...

IBT: The Franks and the Burgundians both start Robin Hood's. Guess we will miss out even on the wonder that the human almost always gets. The Swedes take Antioch from the belegured Abbassids.

Turn 5: Time for some serious MM'ing. All builds switched to blacksmiths and courthouses. Once our infrastructure comes up to full strength, we should be ready to hammer the bulgars. Sliders set 0 science, 10% lux. We can't afford to run more than minimum research anyway it seems. VP check reveals that the Byzantines have reached 9k. Purchasing either Divine Right or Polearms seems to be a no-go; might need to try a steal at some point.

IBT: Salzberg flips back to the germans :mad: I had pulled out most of our troops at least.

Turn 6: The Franks arn't doing so well. The Cordovans and the Danes are pressing them hard. A copule of cities have been razed, and Bordeaux and Cleremont are now teal. The Abbassids are falling beneath the Byzantine juggernaught. Jerusalem is exposed. Our time may be running short if we are going to have a chance to stop them.

IBT: Frankish Knights are spotted approaching Regensberg. Germany's time is growing short.

Turn 7: I just realized that we broke our treaty with France by signing peace. Sorry, major mistake on my part. :mad:

IBT: Regensberg holds. The French now have polearms.

Turn 8: With Buda's blacksmith turning out new weapons, it hits 40 spt and can now spit out an MDI everyturn :cool: Polearms is widely known now.

Turn 9: Not much. Byzintines are up to 12.5k vps (they are beating the crap out of the Abbassids!) Next leader should definitly being our Bulgar war.

Turn 10: No real changes.

Preturn: Hawk WM like a crazy fool. Get Defender of Europe for MC, WM and 70 gold from the Rus. Our reputation is toast as no one takes our gpt. Thats ok because we make like 8 gpt. Upgrade a couple of warriors. (I didn't really watch the whole gold count thing but I built an embassy or 3 and did some upgrades and ended with more gold than we started with.) Bulgars are told to leave, they don't so I move to make them leave.
IBT: Bulgars kill a spear at Pecs. Danes have 12+ beserks in our territory. Byz and abby's sign peace and declare war. Byz and English start Robin Hood.
Turn 1: build embassy with Danes. They have iron. Get an ROP. Assualt Sofia, lose 2 swords and 1 rider, kill 4 spears, 1 sword get city 2 pults and a worker. Germany's destruction recaptures Ruse.
IBT: Kill 2 bulgar swords no losses. Defensive bombard rules.
Turn 2: Rename MDI army to Money. Money and his friends take Kutmichevesta. Lose 1 rider, get a pult. Lose 1 sword to kill a pillaging sword.
IBT: Al muiz wanted some stuff from us. I told him where and how hard to shove it. Apparently the translator worked as he declared war.
Turn 3: kill som bulgars. MM cities to try and get as many as possible to 10, 14, and 20 spt. Built a lot of TH's during my reign as well as some temples and such. Also I built a lot of spears to try and get our riders and swords into the action.
IBT: Lose Germany's Destruction even though he was fortified in a city with 7 hp left.
Turn 4: Lose 4 riders to kill 2 bulgars, but the 5th one popped out Monkey. (A great leader, or a cartoon character whichever);
IBT: Cordova shows up with a bunch of ansars and stuff.
turn 5: lose 1 rider but capture Pleveca. Move some troops.
IBT: France and byz ally aggainst abbissids.
Turn 6: Capture Svedets. Make Money the 2nd out of 3 MDI. Bulgars have Pliska and 4 cities in Siberia.
IBT: France and Castille make peace.
Turn 7: Start the assault on Pliska.
IBT: Abbassids and denmark sign peace. Salzburg is now Frankish.
Turn 8: Pound Pliska some more. Lose 4 riders total. Turks have middle class. Get polearms from germany for peace, quarry and iron.
IBT:Bulgars and Poles sign peace. Sven gets 57 gold and a TM. Germany and France sign peace. Norway declares on Abby's.
Turn 9: destroy Bulgars. No leader on king, even though I used an elite. He had a total of 14 vet spears, 1 reg spear, 1 reg sword and a king.
IBT: Abby's and Poles sign peace, Swedes get Robin Hood.
Turn 10: Hawk WM for a bunch again. Can't pry IO out of Byz. Found New Pliska. Most units are unmoved.

Byz 15995, Us 11375, we are in second.
We have 3 options here. One is go after the Byzantines hard, 2 is go after the Poles hard, 3 is play defense and kill all the units in our territory.
I lean towards 1 or 2 but the Byz have Pike everywhere, whereas the poles don't even have MC. This makes the Poles an easier target, but we are still weak compared to both. The Byz troops are away from us currently, but they have the resources to buy friends. If we go against the Byz we need to buy allies quickly, for sure the Danes and Turks. (Danes due to the now 15 zerks in our lands)
We have Buda at 46 spt, and 3 other cities are over 20 spt. Pretty much now every city should make units every turn. Infrastructure is almost a thing of the past. Marketplaces aren't important as no one will take our gold. The effectivenss of riders is almost done except for hunting down spies, longbows and inquisitors. We have about 12 riders left, but even for assualting towns with spears they are not so good.
We can win this one, the best way is to make sure the Byz don't get to capture many cities.
The Money brothers (armies) slice through spears like butter, and if we go against the Byz are pretty much the only thing we want hitting cities. Good luck Bede.
