I appear to get the same amount of gold no matter how far my Great Merchant travels to a CS. Has anyone else received more gold dependant on the distance they require you to travel, subject to barbs??? I'm trying ti figure it out. Thx.

Nope. Just stuff the GM into the desired city-state.If you get it very early (from Great Lighthouse, for example) it's worthwile to build the customs house.

The last time I used a great merchant I got 500 gold from the trade mission. I would suggest making a customs house if you're getting under 50GPT, otherwise start a golden age, you'll get way more than 500 gold in the 10 golden age turns.

But you won't get the influence with the city-state as well...burning a Great Merchant within a city-state and then gifting them the 500 gold gets you an ally for a very long time.

Especially good if you can nab the Great Merchant early on.
