I've never tried multiplayer in any civ before, how does licensing work for Civ IV?

I assume with only one copy, I can play hot-seat multiplayer.

But, what if my wife and I want to play multi-player at home (one on the desktop, one on a laptop, assuming that I get it working on a laptop)?
Do we need two licenses, two seperate sets of CD's, etc?

Or can we play locally, two machines in the same house, with one copy?

All you need in one copy if playing at home. The CD isn't used to play the game (unless it different from other games) only for copy protection so after you reach the title screen you can remove the CD and pass it to your wife.
