I will be having my girlfriend over this Friday (we took the day off) and want to play a quick game of Civ IV in multiplayer. I have two laptops in addition to my desktop (all Windows), though one is very old (though still made well after Civ V was released). I would ideally like to be able to continue this game when we're apart (we don't live together yet), but would like to play with the fog of war versus screen sharing hinting at our locations, so a hotseat / PBEM would be the last resort. The problem is, she has a Mac, so we can't just use the Steam version to play together as is.

Would I be better off cleaning the old laptop and giving it to her to play the Steam version with me? But I read that this has a limit of 4 players, if we ever have more people. Would that be the point where we switch over to the Direct IP version and use Zulan's server?

Will switching to the Direct IP version break single-player games already in progress?
