Does anybody still even play this game?

And I was *that* close to flaming you. And don't worry, it won't die. Even if something happens and I lose the net forever (How that could happen beats me) I will continue to lug around my 640k laptop with civdos installed on it.

We have a few players here, and yes, we all still play

10x10 pixels is all I need damnit

This game shall never die! :p

To all you Civ 4 players,

Your Civ 4 is nothing but the origiinal Civ with fancy graphics, and a scenario editor. You don't even remember the game that started it all, for shame! There is only a few people who remember, and even less who even play it. Don't let this great game die!

Read your sig line and it's directed at me(i play civ4):

What must 2 games have in commen, so you would say that "game x is nothing but game Y with fancy graphics"?

I ask because IMHO the differences between Civ1 and civ4 are in my eyes large and about the same order of magnitude as between Civ1 and Call to Power2:
Same basic game concept, but different rules for production, combat, government and a few other things(i'm just using ctp2 for comparison, it's far behind any civ version except for worker management).

And i do remeber the original civ, for example i remeber that legion cost 20 resources, is 3/1/1 and requires one tech(bronze working) as prerequisite and is very cheap and early to get. Armor is rather late to get(~automobile, needing at least combustion as prerequisite), has cost 80, is 10/5/3 and can attack multiple times.

I remeber also the combat system:
So 4 legions are roughly as expensive as 1 armor and if all 4 get to attack the armor, the armor has just a 15% chance to be victorious. If the armor attacks all 4 it has a 68% to win. It's always win or dead and no half damage after 2 legions and flee somewhere to heal and come back to kill the remaining 2.
From this short analysis i conclude, that all the research spent to be able to get armor is not well invested, just stay in despotism(upkeep cost are less relevant) and get out more legions.

Civ2:
legion 40 resources, 4/2/1, 1 hit, 1 firepower, armor 80 resources 10/5/3, 3 hit, 1 firepower. That is 2 legions per armor, chance of armor to win, if attacking always, something like 88%, if defending 62%.
Sounds like a good idea in Civ2 to develop armor instead of using legion to conquer the world.

Sorry, that makes a huge difference in game, it leads to totally different strategies, how can you say there is no relevant difference?

I won't yell at you but you can't attack with 4 units at once
personally i think civ I is the best because I love the graphics(I'm a sucker for old dos graphics) and the simplicity and because i've been playing it since I was 5 and I'm emotionally connected to it(I need a gf, i know already)
but yeah, that's just me

Well, I just got it sooooo, it's not gonna die. NEVER. I will play it til I die and pass it to my children.

I meant that's just my take on it

Those are the same reasons I play it.... Only I started playing when I was 8.

I don't understand. 4units afaik can very well attack one, of course one after another.

Da da da blah blah blah. If you think Civ1 is ginna die, I would say you'll die first. Sure Civ4 is fancy and all. But precious Civ4 wouldn't be here if it weren't for Civ1.
^Gotta give Civ1 all due respect.

It is an excellent game, i just tried to understand, why someone has in his sig something like "civ 4 is the same game as civ 1, only better graphics".
It just doesn't make sense to me if 2 games require very different strategies to say they are the same.

BTW, is there any legal way to get civ1 for free?

Otherwise i have to look on ebay, i think i'd like to play it again, when my new computer is in repair again, to compare it to civ 2,3,4. My memory is dim.
