Does Combat Rating Do Anything?

Side note: Does anyone have any tips for playing the Byzantines in MTW:2? Whenever I try, I get owned by either Hungary with their knights, or by the venitians with their numbers. (Where DO they get all those militias?). The turks are a annoyance in Asia Minor, but their bloody diplomats are making Constantinople revolt. How do they do that and not loose any influnce pionts
? So any tips for the campaign map?

Here are some nice tips: Cavalry archers own the knights of Hungary, along with the militia. Also, with some luck, you can just ignore the Turks/Mongols if you get three fortresses along the side of Asia Minor.

Yeah, but what about their horse archers? I always endup loosing to many horsemen. Although venice is really annoying because every battle turns into either an infantry slug fest or trying to kill their pavise crosbows.

Okay, but do my archers go on the flanks, behind my first infantry line, in front, or somewhere else entirely? Are they also even worth builiding because they all have a missle of 9 i belive with no 'effective against armour'.

I normally put archers behind infantry. And yes they are absolutely worth building. Usually I can wipe out at least 30-50% with archers alone (with proper support to defend them).

Yep, I put my archers behind my infantry, javelin troops out front or flanks if I have them (which I don't as soon as I get enough archers). With all missile units, I've found it effective to click on the front row of the enemy, especially when the enemy is close together as some missiles overshoot and hit the enemy behind too :p

Thanks, I always put my Archers in fron of my infantry to avoid possible friendly fire and so they can advance into range on the enemy. Does anyone have any campaign map stratagies for Byzantuim? Defeating Venice is a must and if you do it properly it is easy. Although I overextended my economy when I took Hungary and trashed it when the Mongols invaded.
Minor Complaint-The Mongols armies were generally smaller than the armies they were facing. They should not have 8+ full armies with awsome generals.

Here is a good way to succeed as Byzantium: capture rebel bases nearby.
Step 2: to keep the Mongols away, capture the three castles north/west of Antioch.
Step 3: Go north. and west. Wipe out Hungary and Venice, take Italy, then get Europe. The Mongols should just waste armies on your castles in the east, leaving your main armies free to conquer Europe.

How do you maintain a large enough army to take out the Turks, while at the same time deterrring Hungary and Venice from attacking you? I managed do this once, but my economy was in such bad shape, I was having to deconstruct barracks and markets to keep it afloat. For referece, I play at medium for both.
Is it possible to suceede as Byzantuim without having gunpowder? I think it is but I am not sure. Also, are there mercenary arquebusiers in the late period?

I play at the same. DON'T ATTACK THE TURKS, ONLY UP TO THE THREE FORTS!!! A small garrison can then prevent any future attack from that direction. And yes, there are mercenary arquebusiers.
