Does Combat Rating Do Anything?

I know that in the game manuel it says that a better combat rating helps your general fight better. I have only seen this be a factor in AI vs. AI battles, like when I am too lazy to fight the single crossbow unit. Since I command all other battles, it appears to have no effect. So my question is, in player commanded battles, does a generals combat rating do anything?

That sounds right. Also, does anyone know how much affect chivalry/dread has? Do you have to be over 5 for it to have any real affect?

I do, its easy to mass rout entire armies just by killing one unit group

Thank you. Most of my battles tend to be the same, (rout the entire enemy army at the same time with flank and rear charges). So when governing cities, dread makes the population angryer or less disruptive while chilvalry makes the population happier?

No, dread pacifies the population.

I don't know what chivalry does, as I don't play Medieval 2.

Thanks for the info. As a question, when the enemy turns around or I get a horse archer behind their lines, do shields give a defensive bonus? They shouldn't because they are facing the wrong way.

does that also apply to ranged units? When using flaming arrows or flaming catapults, there should be a moral drop if the person beside you gets squished by a big flaming rock.

yes, if you read reactions (the things in parentheses), you can see something along the lines of "panicked by artillery fire".

While we are somewhat on the subject, does anyone know the advantage of using standard arrows vs. fire arrows?

Standard arrows: more accurate, no panicking effect

Fire arrows: less accurate, has a panicking effect

Well that's what I was assuming, but does one deal more damage than the other?

Thats odd, I never get any reaction information. I only get the eager/steady/wavering/fleeing stuff. Fire arrows do cause more damage, but since they take longer to reload, I only use them against infantry with no ranged or cavalry support. Or with archer militia against battering rams or siege towers.

Does anyone know if there are maps for playing in certiant times in the game. I want to play as France in the Late Middle Ages, but don't have the patience to play through an entire game.
