Does a resource disappear if you build a city on it?
Say I build a city on a hill that has iron. Will that city automatically get iron without a quarry? how will that work?

Thanks

If you have the technology to see a resource and improve that resource's tile, then settling on it will mine/pasture/farm/whatever it automagically.

P.S. Don't try to quarry iron. ;)

Yes the city will grant access to the resource right away if built on it. Some people do this on purpose when they need it right away and can't wait for a mine to be built.

Actually my experience (iirc) is that luxury resources takes one turn to get access to. I mean - you settle a city on top of a luxury, happiness goes down by 3, then only in the next turn it goes +5 (of course if it's a new luxury). On iron though it's instantaneous - you plop down a city and can upgrade warriors to swordmen in the same turn. Also, if you settle a city on a resource that you don't yet have the technology to access to (mining/calendar), then the resource becomes available immediately (=in the same turn) when you research that technology.

Furthermore, most non-luxury resources functionally disappear when settled, but if any of the outputs of the unimproved tile exceed the usual city square amounts, you get that bonus. So settling on a 3 food square gets you a 3 food city square - actually a nice bonus early game.

So it's generally not advisable to build cities on top of wheat tiles, since then I won't be able to benefit from the farm improvement(s)?

Yep. Generally it's only really advisable if you are going for an ICS (insane city sprawl) style where you need the happiness asap, or if the perfect tile (river/mountain/hill/coast combo for instance) just happens to be a lux. Improvements are strong.

Apparently, if you settle on a resource as Indonesia on another continent, the existing resource vanishes and is replaced by the Indonesian spices. This was mentioned in another thread.
