Haven't played much or hung out at the forums for a few months, but back when we had a BNW forum there were lots of posts about AI missionary spam. Don't see any recently, so was wondering if this has been unraveled.
Like many, I thought such complaints were due to player blind spots, such as failing realize the powerful faith engine that can be achieved through certain beliefs (notably, the handful of faith-generating pantheons and a few enhancer beliefs). The other major factor would be the Great Mosque and Boradour wonders, and a scant few sopols that can spawn GP's. But I've seen this behavior enough now to call it a trend, and scrutinizing the civ's in question, I just don't see how they manage to send out a constant torrent of missionaries and/or GP's without some advantage that the player doesn't have.
For instance, in my last game my neighbor Morroco was able to confound my attempts to spread my religion. I was generating more faith per turn (a tale told by faith-seeking CS quets). He didn't have the faith wonders. His pantheon was +30% city-attack strength. His enhancer was defenders of the faith. I just couldn't figure how he could keep all the missionaries coming. Conversely, I had the Great Mosque and the enhancer that makes missionaries more potent, yet still I didn't seem to have an edge.
Granted, he was an era behind me technologically most of the time, and that makes hiss missionaries cheaper, but that seemed unlikely to make it all that easy to stream missionaries.
This particular game was at king diff.
