Does the Invisible Man have to be blind?

The retina doesn't focus light, it just mesures and interprets the light so the brain can form an image. The lens would probably still be capable of focusing light, as it is already transparent.

"Invisible" is not the same as "transparent."
You are worried about invisible retinas - might as well worry about invisible blood and invisible teeth and all that too, while you are at it.
Would it not be easier to have his entire skin absorbing all the light that strikes it and emitting light identical to what is on the other side of his body, at all times? He can even still have eyelids and still sleep, that way.

But it's almost impossibe to do that over such an irregular surface withoug creating a clearly visible distortion to the image. Besides, the original novel claims that the invisible man attained his status by finding a way to render himself transparent (as was stated earlier in the thread, and the book) That's why we're also discussing transparency.
