Yesterday night... I was drinking with some friend .. who happens to be a casual player... and in the past he has never been able to beat me ... not even once.. no even a draw... but yesterday we were talking about chess and we decided to play a match.. I was a little of bit drunk I have to say... and the unexpected happened... he won... I was so so so dissapointed of myself ... he is aware that it was not my best game of course.. I played a horrible game from start to finish... and now the day after... the board is still the way it ended yesterday... and it makes me feel bad and dissapointed... I have never experienced this before .. this feeling ... of I dont know what.. ... ... has this ever happened to someone? .. how much it took you to get over an impressive defeat? .. for me ... now .. at the moment I cant even see a chessboard.. it makes me feel angry...

thx

One of my fond early chess memories is playing chess out on the "quad" (central quadrangle shaped field) during Quad-Jam (yearly music fest, that year we had the Roots, IIRC, along with many decent small time bands) in my man Moses' tent. He had the biggest tent & was kind of a bad man on campus type (who loved chess & our chess club :)). I was very, very drunk but playing 5-minute chess with all comers. I did pretty well considering I could barely stay sitting. :D The drink I was having was some sort of super-smooth milky rum who's name escapes me now (understandably).

Sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately, it just reminded me of an incident from my youth...

I was visiting a fairly high-powered friend who was at Oxford doing his PhD in Theoretical Physics.
He, and some friends, and I went out up the river on a punt to find a pub.

The early warning signs were already flashing: in the pub I announced to my friends that I was leaving - at which point the entire pub started applauding...

I had to be helped out of the punt back near the college and, for some reason, decided to run away.
They caught up with me, locked my arms in a firm but loving embrace, and took me back to the rooms.

Someone proposed a game of chess, and they also proposed playing together against me, for some reason I cannot remember.

The board was placed on the floor next to me.
I won the first game; which led to a deathly silence, and then passed out during the second.

I was never invited back....
