Don't draft me, I'd rather be a slave.

Anyone else find it strange that drafting a unit causes 3 unhappiness while whipping one causes only 1? I mean I know draft dodgers get pretty worked up, but prefer being a slave that's ridiculous.

Not mentioning the slave is going to die under the whip ;)

There are more people who enjoy getting whipped (or spanked or whatever) than people who enjoy dying in a trench.

Yeah, but in the Civilization world they have to work to death, whilst the drafted ones still have a chance to survive....

Dead people cant complain and be unhappy
drafted can :D
..and dont even mention the poor family and relatives of a drafted guy killed in war..that's at least 3 unhappy faces

... while the family and friends of a slave who died under the brutal fist of his slavemaster will celebrate this? ;)

  very funny thread:D
Mayby it's funnier to build a statue of liberty then running into machineguns;)
and you don't know if the slaves die after completing a wonder,
they just don't work any tiles, maybe they got work in the city,
like building houses or laying roads.

Game balance.

maby its cus thear scared to become slaves too... :P thay dont want to get killed allso... lol

It's ironic that you can build a Statue of Liberty with slaves. (perhaps it's more ironic that in real life it was given to a nation that had only abolished slavery 20 years earlier......)

Game wise, I've found that running Nationhood may be better than Vassalage under legal in war. Remember the 2:) with barracks with Nationhood, so happiness shouldn't be too much of a problem in war, and I think in CIV numbers outdo experience in general

Something else that hasn't been mentioned, not that you ever need to justify something that's good for game balance...

Slaves can be oppressed with very little backlash. Slaves are not just poor people -- they're property. They are not citizens. They rival about the same amount of rights as a prisoner, and even some prisoners were treated better than slaves. Furthermore, even many SLAVES accept that they are slaves, and their children will be slaves, and that this is just the way it will always be.

The draft actually affects all people equally (with the exception of the extremely wealthy and well connected, but don't ask me about that, ask George W. Bush and Dick Cheney). These are not just full citizens, but often people who are well liked in their communities, with commitments and responsibilities.

It's understandable that people would care more about their fellow citizens -- from working class to middle class -- going off to war. Slaves are isolated from society and aren't even considered citizens. Sometimes they weren't even considered human beings.

Also, changing the production to one unit and whipping it will always cost more (whips cost 50% more pop when rushed in one turn); since drafting will always cost 1 pop, there has to be something to balance, and thats the 3 unhappy. So instead of losing 2-4 pop you lose 1, but you get 3 unhappy.

But if you really want, you can whip and draft in the same turn :) In desesperate wars, i do that all the time.
