you discover Steam Power and search your huge map to find there are just 6 sources of coal - and you have 5 of them! And I'm not sharing either, so there.

Getting to Steam Power is one of the highlights in the game for me. I love building railroads. A full network means you can reduce garrisons and just send troops where they are needed. I remember in my first ever game of civ3 searching for coal in vain. That was before ctrl/shift/M highlighted the map and it was so hard to find. The nearest civ with coal was France but I couldn't see it. Finally found it 400 years later in the shadow of a mountain.

So this time I'm going to make the most of it - I wonder if I can invade and tie up that other coal source too.

That's pretty nice. In alot of my games I make it to Steam Power and find that, god damnit, there are no sources of coal in my territory. Not even with the huge jungle I settled in and around. Even before the resource ratio decrease of Conquests. Steam Power always had me anxious because of the tendency to not have any coal.

I chalk it up to badluck mostly.

Don't you hate it when coal appears on the only unroaded tile in your territory? Had me swearing at myself for not roading it for quite a few minutes... 50 workers lined up nicely just waiting to build that rr, now I have to move some of them and build the road!!!

You better sell some of it; otherwise the others' turf will need RRing when you capture it. :)

I wouldn't sell it to them (unless you really need the money or get advances for it?) I think that the lack of a production bonus / slowness of movement they'll suffer is well worth the pause while you RR it yourself (if/when you capture their land)?

Coal is a strategic advantage - hold onto it.

I love it when you make a lucrative tech-for-GPT deal with the AI, then ask kindly that they withdraw their scouting warrior out of your territory and they declare war, essentially giving you the tech for free.

I just got another reason to "love it when" :) I just stole Replaceble Parts(bcs Im stil laround 6-7 techs behind tech leader), in my first Deity game, to discover, the only one who has Rubber from three strong AIs is this one, who I started to wipe out already:) All other rubber sources already belong to me:))

Don't you just hate it when you connect your iron, only to have it disappear when a source of coal appears within the same city radii? (not to mention it was your only iron)
