I am very surprised that this hasn't got a thread of its own yet!

I went to www.doom3.com before and had a look at the trailor and some screenshots => it looks fantastic! From a few previews I've read, the emphasis is as much (if not more) on scaring the heck out of you as it is on the FPS-side.

Our local PC game store is taking pre-orders, but AFAIK the release date keeps slipping. :( I haven't yet been able to find the minimum specs for it, but I understand it is going to be very greedy on the GPU!

Still, I mentioned to my significant other that I might need a new video card, because my current one has a noisy fan... Her response: Buy one when you get paid. :D

It looks scary

It's the sequence of perhaps the most popular game of all time: Doom (I & II). ;)

It's in development for years and years. I trust it'll be a great game, but I doubt they will live up to the high expectations of both being the sequence of Doom I & II and the long time waiting.

3D shooting games started by ID software with Wolfenstein 3D. Then came Doom. Then Duke Nukem 3D (Realms Entertainment) and Quake (ID software), of which I preferred Duke Nukem. Quake II brought me back to ID software. But of Unreal Tournament (Epic Games) and Quake III I prefer Unreal Tournament again.

Don't forget that Half-Life and its numerous spawn also got in there somewhere along the way. Hopefully in Half-Life 2 I won't be getting stuck in the floors of elevators all the damn time.

Well, a lot of it is lineage....

But IDs reputation for making good games is what made that lineage (or legacy) in the first-place. You can almost be sure that given its predecessors, this game will be great.

One thing I like about the trailor is that although the ambience is 'dark', there is still a lot of detail. In Doom 1 & II (and final doom ;) ), the 'dark' atmosphere was simply created by painting a black fog over everything => you needed to turn up the screen brightness to make it playable. It looks like this problem has gone with the new graphics engine. :D

Sounds good, I remember playing the original as a kid. I think they even made a N64 version of Doom. Unfortunately I won't be able to play Doom 3 for some time, the computer requirements are stagering! What was the video card you needed, something like 512 Mb! The modern consoles are only 1/4 of that!

There is a version being made for Xbox at the same time as the PC version is being made. It looks good and you only need to spend $150 for the entire Xbox....but I need an excuse to upgrade my computer. I have already started on my wife about Doom 3. :D

You and me both. ;)

Is it coming out on PS2 as well? My partner keeps talking about buying one of those. Initially it was for the DVD playing capability, but we just bought a DVD player. Maybe its for her daughter to play games on. :hmm:

I just check IGN and they have DOOM 3 listed for XBox but not PS2. Not surprising though, XBox is more capable than PS2. If it ever comes out for PS2 it will be at least 6 months afterwards and will have worse graphics unfortunately.

What makes you say that? With any game that I've played on xbox and ps2, I've never noticed a difference. Although the only game that I can remember playing on both was splinter cell, I didn't notice any graphical differences.

And to stay on topic, Doom 3 doesn't hold any attraction for me. Neither did any of its predecessors. These types of fps games don't interest me much. My flatmates can't wait for it though.

With Spliter Cell the lighting effects were not as good on the Playstation. It would be hard to notice unless you were looking for it.

I wasn't too interested in Doom 3 at first, then I saw the trailer. It looks like a great fast paced shooter.

I played Doom from the Beta onward on a x386 and a single figure frame-rate. Doom 2 was better on a P1 66. Then came Quake, and I was back to single figure frame rates, and then Quake 2 and again frame rates around 20.

Duke 3D was never a problem and the characters attitude and humour made the gameplay wonderful and particularly multiplayer absolutely fantastic. D3D is the best !st person shooter in history IMO, and it's not because of the fancy graphics.

When I could afford a graphics card then playing CTF or Rocket Arena on Q2 was a lot of fun. I still play Q2 on a lan now with frame rates of around 250 with sync off. Similarly, UT has better gameplay than UT2003 IMO and at LAN parties always seems to be the game we end up playing.

If I need a $500 graphics card to get a framerate of 50-60/s then I can't see me buying the game for a while. The memory of not being able to play Quake with my Cyrix processor is still too painful. It's all about frame rate for me.
