Down With Domination!

I am the same. Although there ARE some games I play to win, most of the games I play I am more interested in having fun along the way. I recently played an 'Age of Discovery' scenario. I lost-according to the existing scoring system-but I had such a great time playing the game that I simply didn't care (if I did, I probably wouldn't have played England in that Scenario ;)!)
My point though, is that in the system I proposed, even people like myself might achieve one or two victory types-even if I don't win afterall.

The percantage for dom. victory is too low. I'm on 55% (pop) in a game and there's no way anyone else can win. It's not fun to continue playing and it takes a lot of time moving everything around at that stage. But you want to see your score, right? To remove dom. victory completly is plain stupid. No one is going to bother to hunt down every single city to win.

Really? It happens in the HOF and GOTM all the time...

Really? well I wouldn't. When the game is not challenging anymore and I know I'm going to win, its not fun anymore. I don't see the point in capturing that last city on an iland at the end of the world...

I would not say it is wise to remove a rather useful feature for a minority of HOF and GOTM players.

However there is a solution that does not involve reworking current victory conditions. In MTW, there were two kinds of conquest victory, Minor and Major. At the 60% point(Minor victory) the game asked whether you wanted to accept a Minor Victory or go for 100% Major Conquest. A similar option could exist in Civ where you were asked if you wanted to accept a victory or continue and try for another victory condition.

Oy!!! Hands of my Domination Victory! :nono:

It's not for no reason that it chalked up the most votes in a recent poll on 'favourite victory conditions'.

@ Aussie Lurker: Sorry man, your suggestion would drive me round the bend. I can see it now: Just as I am building up to make a massive intercontinental invasion the victory screen pops up to tell me I've won a 25% domination victory! Or worse, someone else has. Even worse the guy I was about to invade won it! Could apply to a 66% dom victory also, if I didn't know when it was going to end. I would sit staring at the screen in disbelief wondering whether I like this game or hate it more. Not knowing would drive me mad and ruin a game. It was a godsend getting the percentage displays with Conquests, please don't take it away.

Yes, but you WOULD know when the end-game phase had begun-you just wouldn't know when it ended. Point is that knowing exactly when a game ends means that you PLAY like you know exactly when its going to end-which is something I really dislike (of course, if you were THAT far from a domination victory, then you were probably going to lose anyway!).
Also, though, I would rather that domination be a lot more than merely-how much land do I control? Instead, land should only grant you 1 point towards victory, each city might grant you 2 points, and each population point would grant you 3 points. In addition, each major civ you have turned into a vassal/protectorate might grant you 5 points+1/(5 cities in that nation), wheras a minor civ turned into a vassal/protectorate might earn you 3 points+1/(5 cities).
