Downloading 3.17

3.17 has been--supposedly--downloading for a half-hour now, and I can't move past the opening screen because I "may not proceed until patching process is complete."

This is in connection with a clean reinstall of BTS. However, before I wiped and reinstalled Vista (which is why I've reinstalled BTS), I gave up on an attempt to download the patch because it was taking so long. I have 2 GB of RAM and a (nominal) cable-download speed of 8 Mbps.

Should the download be taking this long?

I have the identical problem. I opened the game and, like an idiot, clicked on "check for updates." It's been over two hours and the patch still isn't either downloaded, installed, or whatever the heck it's supposed to be doing.

Unlike rlohmann, I'm using XP SP2. I've got BTS patched through v3.13. I'm networked to another computer. It uses broadband and my wireless connection is 54 Mbps.

You think yours is bad? Mine I had download overnight and It is still downloading after 12 hours.

I just gave up on the ingame updater and downloaded the patch itself, I forget from where. It's fairly large for a patch at 168mb, but shouldn't take THAT long.

edit: right, I got the patch from a torrent due to the aforementioned issues with the ingame updater. Only 'reputable' source I found via google is http://www.xfire.com/downloads/3218/, though http://www.bigdownload.com/games/ci...c/civilization-iv-beyond-the-sword-317-patch/ also has it.

Once you download it, how do you install it?

Save it to your desktop as you download it, and then double click it and follow the instructions. It is just like installing a new program (in that it's entirely automated).

I gave up, killed the game in task manager and downloaded and installed the patch from one of the popular file hosting sites. I started the update inside the game and then went to dinner and a movie, when we returned the game would still not let me switch away from that and kept telling me I may not proceed until patching is complete, thats when I flipped it off and realized that there must be a bad connection on the official servers and just downloaded the patch manually which took all of about 6 minutes, and another 5 to install it.
