Dr kossin #34

It's a dead-end tech that leads nowhere.
I will research it if...
-my neighbor goes WHEOOHRN and I'm the likely target
-no horses/copper against barbarians and no convenient land for fogbusting
-I need horse archers (rare)/longbows

Interesting. I will have to start implementing that idea into my games. Eventually, you get it though. I see you picked it up from The Internet in DR#33. Is that how you generally catch up as well?

I don't rely on The Internet too often but sometimes it's useful when there are a few fast teching AIs left and you're planning on Space/Domination/Conquest.

once the AI capture that barb city there's a good chance they'll march a settler toward the copper. If you manage to capture it yourself, this start looks very good.

That start looks great. Three cities up with pretty prime real estate, and blocking the Ottomans. Does the map end right at the bottom of that screen? I've never played inland sea before, so I wouldn't know. But that would make sense as to why you didn't see about founding that 3rd city 1S.

Just wondering, how many immortals did you have to build to keep up with the barbs?

for resources you can trade a horse to an AI for a few resources because they generally place a high value on strategic resources like that.

just wondering, would immortal rush be better?

Yea, I'll be shifting Immortals in that direction and the city should be mine. There's at least one worker in it as well so it's well worth it, plus good food... potential Globe Theatre city.

No, this is a flat world wrap, meaning you can't cross edges. The other option is Cylindrical which allows east-west crossing[in that case the Sea is split in the middle on the mini-map and appears on both ends on the map].

I built 2 Immortals initially which kept barbs at bay. Perhaps just 1 would have sufficed however early on but I played it a bit safer. I built 1 or 2 more later on iIrc as the initial Immortals were busy elsewhere and a few barbs came from the southwest.

Yea, good point. That can land me a good 2 resources and some gpt.
I'll probably look to expand a bit more however, if you get my drift :groucho:

Not enough forests to chop imo for it to be a safe. It might work however depending how soon Gilgamesh hooks up his copper. Vultures are a bit more successful against Chariots than Axes and Spears... they're spears. Perhaps someone will volunteer and try it out?

Look forward to the next post. I just got beat to a space race victory by 1 turn by :):):):)ing Victoria. So pissed. Can't seem to win consistently enough on monarch.

That is one well played opening!

Non-spoilery stuff from shadow:

The initial move of the scout RNG strikes again! Had the same opening you did (except for scouting). Ended up with Gilga settling just SE of Eastern Horse around 2800BC (forcing me out of that location).. Could've queued archery and settled more north to block, but somehow decided to settle by southern horses to get Immortals online. Ended up with Gilga all over the northern border and just 6 cities for me.

Never thought of the possibilty for Oracle. That was pretty sweet. (Hindu went ~3200-3300 in my game)

Spoiler :

Did tech good, won Lib, but couldn't quite see a warring way. Figured the game was lost with my initial settlements, really.. but continued on towards UN.

Got a city taken by Nappy (and his Ottoman vassal) before my friendly AP resident Qin halted all attacks on me (for some reason he wanted to stay at war himself?...)which caused me to miss Physics by 1 turn (to Gilga) .. ended up 5 turns short of rushing the UN when Gilga got it. With the UN I would've had a fair shot, without it was game over.

I've actually tried both (and getting same result).. even moving scout the exact path you did (from what I could gather from screenshots).

Ofcourse.. If I moved south, something else happened... just tried playing till Oracle with my "other" opening, and lost it 1440BC.. so not much I could do :)

Not sure if settling first or moving scout first matters. But opening direction of scout sure does.. and probably path of scout to some extent?

yes bug, both matter. (path after first move will affect seed) However it is done by turns so settle first instead of move scout does not have an effect that I can tell. Other times (especially war) move rotation order will matter but I don't think it has an effect for first turn.

Heres my start which went wheel - pottery. I was planning on going straight for monarchy, but accidentally put turns into alphabet and ended up going alphabet - currency. I cottaged up the capital and once the library + academy + monarchy are in it will be a monster.

Its 950 BC and I just picked up currency. Sully got blocked by barb cities and is expanding my way, but otherwise I think I got settlers out faster by taking the wheat from the capital and settling the cow to the north.

Round 2

I didn't backup my auto-saves and started toying with test games so there won't be that much screenshots. Refer to the save when in doubt :)

After Currency, I researched Fishing>Sailing and then Civil Service, which was completed in 50BC. Capturing the second barbarian city proved useful with the gold it provided.
Spoiler :

Next turn, the AP was built by Ragnar under Judaism, which would later spread to me. I've begun converting my cities for the hammer bonus. I would later convert to Judaism as just about everyone is running the religion... plus Gilgamesh

After that I made a quick detour via Masonry>Monotheism (for Organized Religion).
After I spawned my next 2 Scientists, I converted to Slavery/Organized Religion.

Here are some of the trades I made:
Spoiler :

Shaka fared very well against Napoleon. You can blame it on Napoleon having a 2-front war with his SoD busy on one end while Shaka ate through the other end. He captured many cities and at one point I decided to stop the war to slow down Shaka. Suleiman had even voluntarily vassaled to Shaka.
Spoiler :

The peace didn't last too long unfortunately and Shaka would vassal Napoleon a bit later. Fortunately, Suleiman broke free.

I kept my monolpolies for as long as I could (Paper and Education). This allowed me to build the University of Sankore and also delay Liberalism for something hopefully bigger.

I double bulbed Education in 325AD and then started researching towards Steel.

A few more trades...
Spoiler :

A good omen in Persepolis...
Spoiler :

Yay, 2 happy in every city!

Another trade.
Spoiler :

In 800AD QSH was able to research Liberalism so I didn't take a chance. I was not quite ready to take Steel but I took the next best thing.
Spoiler :

I played an extra turn after that to get these two trades:
Spoiler :

And stopped there.

Techs
Spoiler :

I'm not sure I'll do a straight Steel beeline, Economics is still available and the Great Merchant could prove quite useful for upgrading Trebuchets. I'll have to see because Rifles might be appearing soon if I delay too much however, which means I'd probably need Rifling as well to proceed.
I would definitely benefit from Guilds for workshops and Apothecaries.

Relations
Spoiler :

Shaka is my biggest worry right now, he has a pretty big SoD and 15 cities that are building more and more units every turn. I'd like to create a 2v1 on him but at the moment it doesn't seem possible. I'll try to keep begging from him as often as possible to be on his safe side. Should an opportunity arise however, I will not hesitate to set as much people as I can against him.
QSH is most likely going for culture while the others seem to be playing along.

If I can help it, I'd like a showdown with Shaka at some point in this game. It should certainly be entertaining :D

Finally, here's Persepolis, starting on Oxford University.

@Grashopa
Very nice techrate! Cottaging outside the capital has no doubt paid off for you. I was a bit more reluctant to do so but I might just have been very wrong it seems. How are the AI faring comparatively in tech?

Kossin, thanks a lot for this game and map. It's very interesting to see how you deal with all these close AIs, barbs, how you decided to build Oracle. Probably in one nice day I will beat this map in diety.

Is it normal that Qin of Chineese looks like Kublai of Mongolians?
