I recently played through Dragon Age Inquisition. Doing so inspired me to replay Origins.

Which game do you think is better?

I happen to like Origins better. I think the story is superior, and the over all game doesn't bog down the way Inquisition kind of did. I think the tactical and level up systems in Inquisition were better, but only slightly.

What do you think and why?

Kindly hide spoilers for Awakening and other post main quest material in Origins as well as for Dragon Age 2, which I have not played at all.

I have kind of the opposite opinion. I agree that Oigins is definitely better, but I think it has the better combat and leveling system and Inquisition the better story. Origin's main quest feels too much like wandering aimlessly around and ticking boxes and Inquisition's skil trees feel too weak and the combat is too focused on the one character you're controlling and too hectic. It feels more like a Mass Effect fantasy spin off than a Dragon Age game, and Mass Effect combat without guns just doesn't work for me.

Dunno, I've only played Origins. It had some weak moments in it's story but I found it pretty enjoyable and very interesting.

When DAI came out at first it seemed like the consensus was it was a good step up from DA2 (not that it's hard to do better than DA2) and while not quite as good as Origins it seemed like a good game. Though as time went on more and more problems arose around the combat system, poor MMORPG quest designs, Hinterlands being just incredibly badly designed, people having to set their system clocks ahead to reduce the extremely long NPC side mission thing times, awful tactical camera, etc. Doesn't look worth picking up until it's $5 for the complete edition anymore. Especially after Pillars of Eternity and The Witcher 3 came out.

Nice hair though.

Inquisition is one of those odd games where I can point out all too many flaws, yet still thoroughly enjoy playing it. Origins is definitely better, but not massively so.

But then, I'm the guy who thinks that in many ways DA2 was the best of the series. Had it had a few more months development to polish it up it would've been way better than either of the other two, but even as is, it has the best setting, the best characters, the best combat and, up to the rushed final act (hope that isn't really much of a spoiler...), the best story. Sure, every cave in the region looks the same, but, hell, you ever been in a cave? They tend to look pretty similar....

Well let me put it this way, I got origins around Summer 2010 and couldn't put it down. I probably play over 100 hours, only beat the game once, but completionist with 50 hours or so plus I played every possible origin through the joining and many much further.

Inquisition I bought on sale around Easter. I've played it less than 10 hours. So is it worse? I don't know, but it certainly doesn't grab me the way origins did.

Origins was just addictive. Inquisition seems to have too many fetch quests mmorpg style and it seems optimized for a controller, not a mouse, yet you can't zoom camera with a controller.

Origins by far. It just feels like more of a rpg. And I'm not a big fan of the conversation wheel in Inquisition and DA2. While it is nice to hear your character speak, it feels limiting to have only 2 voices. I haven't played with a dwarf, but neither voice seems very dwarf like. And by saying Origins is more RPG, I mean the game offered the most choices. Yes you can even have a warrior that uses bows in Origin. And if I recall correctly, you could have your rogue use a sword and shield (although that isn't advisable). Warriors could also dual wield in Origins as well. Mages seemed to have more spells as well.

And I admit, I really liked the grey warden plot, and I like the darkspawn plot. A lot of people didn't like the cliche monsters taking over the whole world bit, but I did. And really, you weren't even fighting for the entire world, you were fighting for Fereldan (presumably, if you failed, Orleis Grey Wardens could have got the job done, although Fereldan would be completely wiped out). Going into the deep roads was fun, something Inquisition lacked (although I think they did have one small portion iirc).

I even liked the fade that everyone else seemed to hate. Although I wouldn't mind if that section was a little shorter. And some people didn't like the Brecilian forest either, but I liked that plot as well.

I liked the character leveling system as mentioned above, you have a lot more flexibility in how you develop your character. It's not dumbed down as DA2 and DA:I. Let's admit it, the character leveling system was dumbed down.

One thing DA:I has over Origins by far is the exploration. Origins outdoor areas could be very limiting. I like the outdoors in real life, so I like the outdoors in rpg's, so I like roaming around mountains or forests. I wasn't a big fan of DA:I indoor areas though, there were no big dungeons like the deep roads, or the werewolf layer. And some of the indoor areas seemed big in scale (not the overall size of the dungeon), like MMO type big. Big interiors are necessary for MMO's, but I don't think they are necessary for Inquisition.

Graphically Inquisition is much better than Origins without a doubt. But Origins is passable, and enough to get you immersed into the world. The art style was pretty good as well, a step up from the horrible art style of DA2.

Now for combat. This one is hard to compare. Origins was way more tactical, at least that's how I played it. I controlled all my characters. Inquisition is more of an action game, but the action is fun. I can't complain about the combat in Inquisition, except the dragon fights which were too long and annoying, but the dragon fights in origins were this way too. The dragon fights in Inquisition I rate worse because it's harder to control the rest of your party in Inquisition. Origins combat is just easier, just not as fun from a action standpoint. But strategically, Origins was more fun, as you had more spells, and more things to do. You could come up with several strategies for a combat scenario, where as Inquisition you often do the same thing every time you enter combat.

On the surface, Inquisition feels like the better game. But once you finish, there is no reason to replay the game. It's too long to replay (way over 100 hours for me). I tried playing as a Qunari mage, but no one really reacted to my unusual race/class combination. I only played a few minutes. Origins I have played through at least 5 complete times. The game is that good. Where as in Inquisition, despite a couple of attempts, I have been unable to replay Inquisition. But maybe some day I'll play as a mage.

DA2 I haven't mentioned too much. I did play the game twice. I even tried installing some nude mods to get me interested in playing it again, but I just can't get past the beginning of chapter 1. I just don't like this game very much. Nude Isabella isn't enough to get me to play. :). And then the annoying Templars and Mages plot. My least favorite part of the Dragon Age universe. Which is another flaw of Inquisition, more annoying Templars and Mages plot (to be fair, one section of Origins had this, but overall it's a small part of the game). I'll take Grey Wardens and darkspawn any day. But I realize that plot is unavailable since the blight doesn't happen that often.

As for humor, I'd rate Origins and Inquisition equally. They both had some funny parts. Oghren and Iron Bull being the highlights here. I didn't romance Iron Bull, but I seen youtube of it. Very funny. But don't just watch it, it's better if you play the game so you understand the personality of the characters (especially Josephine).

DA: Origins > DA: Inquisition > DA2

Awakenings was pretty good too, though the dlc for Origins wasn't very good. I haven't played any dlc for DA2 or Inquisition.

Sorry that was such a long post, but I am impassioned about DA: Origins. I know they'll never make a game like Baldur's Gate again, and Origins is as close as you'll get.

Some of my love may be from nostalgia, but I feel they did a really good job creating their own game universe. And I was actually happy they moved away from D&D (which can be too limiting when played on a computer). The only drawback of Origins is mages having to do too much healing (where as D&D had other healing classes). Inquisition just got rid of healing altogether which was okay I guess, but limiting.

Inquisition is fun, but in different ways.

Inquisition suffers from an embarrassment of riches. There is SO much to do in it that it becomes difficult to find what's fun. Many of the tasks can be tedious. Those are generally optional, but the completionist video gamer mindset runs counter to leaving things in the table.

In Origin, on the other hand, a player is generally going to get ninety percent of the stuff done in any one zone the first time, bar hubs. each trip out is novel., and there's less backtracking.

One thing I like about Inquisition is the combat. There are fewer powers and more quick slots. As a result I don't have to pause to fire off a power. Plus I found I didn't have to micromanage my party's tactics as much in Inquisition. Other people may have other opinions on that.
