Please help. I`ve just bought Civ4. When i put it in my drive it just makes clunky noise, like it`s trying to read it but cannot. The first time it happened i took it back to place of purchase and exchanged. This is now my second copy and the same thing is happening ? My system is; Windows XP, Pentium 4, 2.50 Ghz, 768 RAM, GeForce 5200 248 MB, obviously got DVD. I have other games that run just fine on my DVD, X3 is one of them and generaly needs mid to top end systems to run it. I`ve even tried to put in CD`s and they at least run on DVD better than Civ4 !! Please help.

Sorry, forgot to mention that in manual it says i should have 2 disks. On both copys that i have now tried there was only 1 ??? Should there be 1 or 2 ???

I think there are suppose to be 2 CD's. If you have the DVD, it's only 1.

I'm thinking it could a problem with your system. Maybe it can't install the game?

You could try your DVD in a friends' DVD-rom to see if its the disc that is a defect or if its the DVD-rom

Mine is doing exactly the same thing!! Whats more the shop told me to check the specs on my pc cos they wont refund pc games! Does this game come on CD's?

After all this wait, and finally buying the game today, the damn thing won't read the disk. Does this game come on CD in the UK? I feel like throwing the damn thing out the window.

that sounds like a real bad disk - did you check to see if the 2 disks aren't stuck together (which would explain why you think you have 1 disk)?

I have put 2 disks in before and that clunky sound is a sign of that - and it usually ruins 1 or both of the disks.

Yes I know what you mean, but no, its 1 DVD disk. I have a DVD drive and the **** thing won't work. I just uninstalled civ 3 too.

Same problem. its a good job i orded a new computer a few days ago!! the same problem better not occur on it!! The thing is that i have a reasonable system with a DVD drive. and the computer doesn't even reconize the Civ 4!

I know my Copy works, cos i tried it on a m8s computer, and it loaded straight away!:( :( :(

Try updating your DVD ROM drivers - or uninstall and reinstall it.

God, someone must know why this is happening. Isn't this forum full of computer geeks? LOL

Come on guys, were really disappointed here, help us figure out why this is happening:(

I get this problem too - I've tried changing DVD drives too (had a spare one sitting around) and get the same problem.

The reason I have a spare one is because my old one had the same problem with Battlefield 2 as well, so I changed it and it started working, now neither of them work with Civ4.

I did wonder if they'd put some new security/copy protection on that was causing problems but other recent games (FM06, PES5) both work fine.

Someone must know something about this

SOLUTION

Hi all,

This problem is hugely frustrating, and I have the same with BF2 so I did some trawling on their forum.

Someone posted "Just leave it for a few minutes" which I didn't think was particularly helpful. But having not been able to find anything else worth trying I gave it a go.

It works.

Leave the disk in the drive, clicking away for 2-3 minutes and it should spin up and start working normally - certainly has for me.

Hope this works for all you guys :) The other alternative if not is to take the game back and get the vanilla CD version.

Just a quick addition to the above - while your DVD drive is clicking away any process which uses the drive will freeze.

This means when your system boots it will sit at the black system overview screen (win2k) until the clicking stops.

After restarting my PC took 4-5 minutes of clicking to start spinning properly so the time seems to be a bit random.

Well i've left my disk in there a solid 10 minutes now and nothing...just clicking away. How long exactly did you leave yours in for?

Did you leave the disk in while restarting? And just wait for it to boot up with the disk in? Or reboot, and then put the disk in?

Ok i left it in there for 20minutes +. Nothin happened. Could 1 of you tell me exactley what you did... please. do u keep it in while restarting the machine

Hey,

I left it in while restarting but that causes it to sit there for ages, it's worked for me just by letting Windows start up, putting the CD in and then waiting.

Like I said the time it takes to start working properly seems to be pretty random though :/ If it doesn't work after 5 minutes maybe take it out and put it back in again.

Sorry I can't be of more help, it seems to be a case of luck more than anyway :(

Glad it not only me, i am on my secong dvd and my dvd rom wont even think about recognising it is there. ia ma about to go plead with asda to tak it back and give me a cd version. i havelooked forward to thsi game for weeks and am sorely disappointed.
