So i just got the game today. i played IV for a while then am moving striaght to BTS. after i installed it, the game worked just fine the first time around. the second time i came to play i got some weird error saying to check my directx video card and some other stuff for the latest updates. and i know its all updated becuase i did it right before i installed the game. cant figure it out the problem. it happens when my resolution is changing which is right before the game goes into the main game. anybody know whats up?

No idea, but if you can get to the options screen, you can change your resolution to match that of your monitor.

Also, if you haven't already, it may be worth upgrading to the most recent (official) patch. I can't remember whether graphics issues made it into the patching though.

Did you upgrade your video drivers between the games? I know that with ATI cards that civ is incompatible with the ATI drivers and you have to use the ones available with windows update.
Not exactly. ATI cards are incompatible with everything unless you use the Catylist Control Center (TM) to fine tune things it seems. My old Athlon machine (now a smoking paperweight) had a Radeon 9600 (I think it was), and I always had trouble with it, even with the Windows update drivers. The only solution was to use the control center, which meant XP took way longer to load. Maybe that was unique to my card, I don't know. I really had problems after I went to a widescreen monitor. But my laptop has ATI graphics and runs fine without the control center, but maybe that's because I'm running Vista.

Oh well. Now I'm an nVidia girl all the way. :D

I have had ATi cards for 8 years now and I do not run the Control Center.
Actually I had my 9600xt burn out a few months ago so I popped my R9000 pro back in and I play CS source and Civ4,Pirates and a slew of Deer Hunter games with little or no problems.

Be sure to check your cables and connections and/or see if you have excess dust buildup on your card because that will give you that particular error.

Also an ATI user. It's true, they can't make drivers at all.
I have a... 9250! Which is so old now ATI don't even support it anymore.
I use third party drivers (Omega) which are the only ones that seem capable of running a game properly. They are based on the Catalyst ones (which are full of fail) but vastly superior. Still, Nvidia is totally the way forward. ¬¬ ATI are on my list of companies whose products suck (along with Western Digital).
Anyhow, the Omega drivers will run most things, Civ runs fine, CS:S runs fine (Or would if my card wasn't so very ancient) and the Catalyst control centre doesn't need much in the way of tweaking (I only adjusted refresh rate and gamma settings, because ATI have no concept of brightness). Definitely worth a look.

Your card probably doesn't have enough video memory. I used to have wierd graphics problems, especially on larger maps, until I upgraded my video card. Since then, no problem.

Make sure your card has at least 256MB of memory.
