Am I correct that if you have the Hoover Dam, you do not need to build a Coal Plant? Or are the bonuses cumulative?

If you have the HD, what do you want to build after basic Factories?

HD provides hydro plant in each city on that continent. Therefore, since power plants are NOT cumulative you do not need either coal or solar power plants on any city on that continent.

You may still want to build nuclear plants, since they give a greater boost to production, but they are relatively expensive and risky.

Because of the automatic power plant in each city you'll probably want a factory in most of them.

Once you have the factory, the next production improvement is the manufacturing plant, which is cumulative with the factory and any single power plant.

edit: you may wish to check out both the 'newbie thread' and the 'FAQ thread', both 'stickied' at the top of the Civ3-General Discussions forum. Those are the best places to ask these kinds of questions, too

Hoover Dam only creates a hydro dam in cities with a river in their radius doesn't it?

No, hydro plant in all cities on the same continent.

Does anyone else think it is daft that coal plants still appear on the build list after you have built a hydro/solar plant or the hoover dam? :(

for Beaver,

I think you are referring to actually building the Hoover Dam. You need to have a river in the radius of the city to build this wonder, but you don't need a river to reap the benefits once it is completed.

You must be very certain that you're not going to lose your Hoover Dam city...

Oops. My bad

Silly Beaver

I'm a newbie but here i'm sure of this. Hoover dam CAN be build on a non-river city. I build it on Marseille 1 week ago and Marseilles is NOT a balnear city, everyone knows that :D

No seriously, there wasn't any water, even on the 21 tiles of Marseille when i build hooverdam in it, only irrigate tiles..
But i don't have the hydro plant in marseille after completed it, only in city near river (or lake) and even if there's no factory in it.
I play version 1 of civIII (no patch, no PTW) and this was done 1 week later...

Now perhaps i'm wrong but i don't know how ^^
