E3 2007: Civilization Revolution First Look @ PC.IGN

When does it come out again? 2008? That gives me enough time to save up money for a wii!

well so it appears this game is not what I thought. I had grander visions than Sid, I guess. :) anyway it looks like a cute little game for younger kids who play on those consoles. I would probably buy it, out of curiosity, for my PC if it became available, but otherwise this is not for the hard-core civ players I think. I am wondering why Sid was quoted as saying this is the game he always wanted to make. really, this?

I think it is...I think the PC really limits what he can do graphically, plus I think the simplified nature of it makes it more of a board game, which is what he likes.

I think it looks cool, the global nature of the map is cool, rather than the flat gameplay screen. So what if they simplified it, its a different game. The graphics don't bug me at all. There's a stylized, artistic aspect to it, which I enjoy. I think the detail and differences between civs will be great.

Plus no one has seen the game in action yet, so don't knock it till you see it. Sounds pretty fun to me.

Yeah, I agree, it's cool. And I haven't played on a console for five years, I'll be glad to get back to it. I need to get my hands on a wii though, all my other consoles are becoming outdated, this looks cool. :goodjob:

"Civilization: Revolution does away with many of the negative concepts and micromanagement aspects of the PC game".

Those . .. .. .. .. . at IGN should realise that some of us like the "negative concepts" of the PC version. I hope Civ 5 PC is nothing like Revolution.

I think they mean that they have removed most concepts that are negative to your civilization, such as pollution. It simplifies the game if you only have to focus on improving beneficial areas and not have to worry about minimizing the effects of such things as corruption and maintenance. I wouldn't worry about Civ5, if CivRev is a success they might plan a CivRev2 for the next-gen consoles, but I think that CivRev is only a side project and it won't change the direction of the series. Perhaps some ideas from CivRev shows up in Civ5, such as an official Game of the Month with leaderboards integrated into the game. Civ4 was probably more "dumbed down" compared to its predecessor than Civ5 will be.

One benefit of using cartoony (or stylized) graphics is that the units are easily recognisable, especially on the smaller screens on handhelds. And remember, Hentai isn't marketed towards children (I hope).

I must say I'm really interested in this game, mostly because of the quick MP-matches, and playing a Sid Meier-designed Civ-style game on a handheld or my Wii. The game is designed with extremely short games in mind, so it will probably feel a lot different from playing a sped up game of Civ4.

And now, the reason I thought about posting in the first place; Does anyone know if CivRev is officially confirmed for the PSP?

i like the idea of economic victory
mabey that is in civ5

That's a good idea, but how would you win, get 30000 gold? :hmm: Or have the most imports/exports over all of history?

Who cares if it is marketed towards children? You can still play it. Hell, Civilization IV is marketed towards Children. It's rated 10+.

is it just me or it looks a bit like heroes of might and magic V?

Looks interesting, although I don't own any of those consoles so I wouldn't be able to play it. :D

if they ever make a civ 5, they better have a different engine, maybe something between spore and crysis engines... I do care about the graphics, but what I care most is the gameplay. will we have the same gamepay frim Civ 3 or Civ 4? or is it going to be another different gameplay?

This game here is quite interesting, I'll try it once if I EVER get a new-gen console and a job.

Since the announcment of Civ:Rev I have always pictured it being back-ported to Civ4 as an opitional expansion pack. With the addition of things like armies and their different experience leves, economic victories, improved match-making, offical Game of the Week, and some of the other improvements this definately has stuff that could be added to the main series. Throw in an optional toggle to play in Civ4 mode with the new additions or CivRev mode and we could have something here.

We really need to look at the positive such as what new things this title brings to the series as a whole and see the big picture for where this may fit in.

I for one am really looking forward to this. There are sometimes where I dont feel like delving into a huge 10hour game and fussing with all the micromanagement. Sometimes I would just like to play a simpler version that didnt require you to check your cities every turn.

This looks like just the ticket. Graphics are . . . hmmm . . . unique, haha.

People on this board are overly critical of a game that will have 0 impact on them.

Have faith in Firaxis and Sid to recognize the difference between the console market and PC market. I'm pretty sure they are well aware that the PC market is for more hardcore Civ players and the console market is for softcore Civ players.

Relax.

I don't mind cartoony graphics. To me, that's a choice. What I like about cartoony graphics is clarity of interface and efficiency. Realism is nice, but often gets blurry, and starts to slow things down.

I don't think Civ 5 will be as gutted as this game is. But if it means we'll get more new features in Civ 5, I'm willing to do away with some of the micromanagement in other areas. If it meant there were a sophisticated resource system, with quantities and conversions and trade markets, I would gladly let the city-tile management become simplified. The same thing for other features, like improved diplomacy, or new warfare features.

Let's put the complexity as close to the interaction between players as possible. The first step to doing that is to streamline the sim-city solitaire type stuff.

Well said!

I would love to see improved diplomacy and warfare. And I think firaxis realizes that you cant keep adding new levels complexity without taking away some. Removing some of the tedious micromanagement would be the ideal canidate for deletion.

I'm fine with it getting in line before CivV. That just gives us more time to play with BtS before it gets outdated. Really, do you want to have a Civ upgrade every year? It's nice to have new material, but it'd be nice to have a good, solid game like that stay around for a while longer before needing to go out and replace it.

That said, I would also be in approval if some of the new features like diverse barbarians, reworked diplomacy, the economic victory (another thing we somehow lost after Alpha Centauri), and some of the army stuff made its way into the core game via another expansion. Compliment it as much as possible; just don't get rid of the stuff we already have.
