To solve the forum server space problem, I have created an upload page that allows you to upload files directly to the CivFanatics file server. Everyone is encouraged to use this easy upload feature to upload files (especially for files that don't need tracking and files over 100 KB) instead of the forum's file attachment feature since we have tons of free space on the file server

The file size limit for this easy upload is 3 MB. If your file is bigger than 3 MB, you can split it into smaller files. You can upload up to 3 files at a time.

File Types Allowed: gif, jpg, jpeg, png, zip, sav, net, ace, txt, pcx

If a file with the same file name already exists, your file will be renamed. Ex. If you want to upload a file call civ.jpeg and the file already exists, your file will be renamed to civ1.jpeg

Update (11/02/02): The forum's attachment file size limit has been reduced to 100 KB.

There is a link to the Easy Upload page at the bottom of every forum page.

Alternative Method for Uploading Big Files NEW

If the file size of your Civ3 modpack/map/scenario/unit is pretty big and you don't want to split it into multiple 3 MB files, you can send me a PM and I will give you login info of a temporary FTP upload account for you to upload the file. The account allows you to upload up to 100 MB.

Below is the updated forum usage guideline for the completed files forums:

----------------------
FILES FORUM USAGE FAQ

What can I post in these files forums?

You can post any file you created to the correct files forums. In your posts, be sure to specify what the file does and provide full installation instructions. Please playtest the file before you post it.

You may not open new threads in the files forum if you don't have file to post.

Can I post beta files/programs in the files forum?

Yes, but please specify the file/program is beta in the thread title and in your post.

All unit previews should be posted in the main creation forum.

I have updated my file and I want to edit the thread title to reflect the update. What can I do?

Currently you can only update the thread titles within 30 minutes after the thread is posted. After that, you'll need to PM one of the Civ3 Moderators or the admin to change the title for you. It only takes us a few seconds to change it, so don't hesitate to send one of us a PM if you want to change the thread title.

What is the attachment size limit?

The current limit is 100 KB. If your file is bigger than 100 KB, you must use our easy file upload system to upload the file to the file server instead of attaching the file directly to the forum. There is a link to the easy upload pop-up page at the bottom of every forum page.

Alternatively, you can upload it to a free homepage provider' server first such as Geocities and Tripod. Yahoo Briefcase is also a good place to upload files. They give you 30 MB of storage space free. You can post links to the file in your post.

Can I edit, delete, or replace attachments after it's posted?

Yes, you can! When you have a new version of your file to post, it's a good idea to remove the old attachment from your post so people always download the latest version and save forum resource. You can do this by editing the post. It will allow you to delete the current attachment, replace it with a new atatchment, or just keep the current attachment. You may want to post a little note such as "version 1.0 removed after 850 downloads" to keep track of the number of downloads.

You can not edit or delete files uploaded to the file server (via Easy Upload). If you need to delete any obsolete files, you can email/PM me and I'll delete those old files for you.

Can I create multiple threads for the same file, but different version?

No, all file version update postings for the same file/program must be in the same thread.

How can I have an annoucement made about my file on the CivFanatics main page?

We check the files forum frequently for new files and make a news post about the file. It's possible that we might miss a few of the files. You can PM/email the admin to let him know about your new file or version update.

How can I see how many times my file has been downloaded?

The forum attachment feature has a download counter so this is obvious. If your file is on the file server, the only way to see how many times your file has been downloaded is to add your file to the newly created Civ3 Downloads Collection, a separate downloads section from the files forum. Our files mamagers add files in the files forum to the Collection regularly.

I have a file that will be about 2 MB that I will want to post on the file upload system this weekend or early nextweek. I also wanted to create a thread for it in the New Modpacks forum for feedback and suggestions. My question it this: is there a way to post a link directly to the file upload system so that people looking at the thread in the Modpack forum could just click on it and download it from the file upload system? If so, how would I go about doing this? I appreciate any help anyone can give me. Many thanks.

It's very easy. After the file is uploaded, click that "view uploaded files link", then right click on your file in that file listing to copy the shortcut (i.e. link) to your file.

For example, here is a link to the "lessyellow.jpg" on the file server:

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads/lessyellow.jpg

Another way to link to your file is by simply adding your file's file name to the end of this URL: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads/

Like this:

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads/YourFileName.zip (or any other extension)

Obviously I'm doing something wrong. I tried to upload my mod--it's a zipped file of 1.65 MB. I hit browse and selected the zipped mod from my desktop. When I hit upload, nothing happens. What am I missing here? Do I need to do something else? Any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you check to see if your connection was sending anything? I've noticed that when uploading files using the system they have here, no upload box shows, simply the bar at the bottom of IE (or if you use netscape I think there's a bar there too) moves slow, and the connection sends data, though there's no obvious indication. So, it could possible be trying to upload, but you didn't see it because...and so on :)

So, check the little modem icon in your systray and see if it's flashing, if not then there's something wrong with your computer or the server (duh ;p )

Anyway....hmmm...blah

I guess this is why...

File Types Allowed: gif, jpg, jpeg, png, zip, sav, net, ace, txt, html, htm, pcx

If someone else upload the same filename, will it replace my file? For example, what would happen if I upload a file "lessyellow.jpg", will it replace the one already there?

some of my units say they are final version in the downloads section, yet they are not, is there any way I can alter them to give them the sound files too.... or even better to put the download links to the new complete units?

You can PM GIDustin about it. He's responsible for adding/updating the units download section. :)

Okay, I can use the easy upload system, but it's sort of annoying if I have a small file. How do I upload smaller files (the old way), everybody else seems to be able to do it, and to see how many times it's been downloaded. It says I may upload files, but how do I do it?

Edit: Err... Nevermind. I just always use the Quick Reply, so I hadn't seen the attack file option. Sorry.

Ok, so it's not a great photo, and it's not that special, but I took that when I went there this january, and that was a nice moment for me, to be in Athens as it was my first real holiday alone :)
