Moving a discussion from a PM to the forums, as it's something that others likely have more expertise in, and which is likely to be of interest to a larger audience as well.

Hi All!

I am looking for a permanent storage where you can upload large files, even several GB.
If you can recommend anything other than 1drive and google drive, thank you.
(Sorry if this isn't the right forum, I just couldn't find a better one)

As for my thoughts (assuming you are referring to modding files, and for online hosting rather than personal storage):

Potentially ModDB? I know various Civ III mods have been hosted there for many years. Another option is Mega. You have to sign on once a year or so to keep the account active, but it's been around quite a while now too (although its predecessor Megaupload got taken down for having too lax of a policy towards pirated content; Mega seems to have changed their policies in that regard).

Do others have better recommendations?

I use ModDB and plan on continuing to do so. As far as I know it has a good reputation and has been around forever.

Would be nice to hear from someone who has had something on there for 10 years though as I'd love to know I can come back to something after years of being away.

Another option is Mega.
I personally like Mega and use it frequently. I think storage is now capped at 20GB on free accounts (my account has 50GB that was grandfathered in), which should suffice for most applications.

I have the desktop app, which basically keeps me logged in, so I don't need to worry about logging in on the site. Same works for the mobile app. If you don't have either you need to log in at least once every three months to keep a free account active. IIRC, they also send a reminder email before marking the account inactive.

I definitely like ModDB. I have an account there but haven't accessed it in ages. I do love that site and get a lot of my Total War mods from there.

I was wondering "why hasn't ModDB disappeared like so many other sites?" Turns out, they created mod.io, the service that many newer games use for hosting and integrating user-generated content. Which means they make money from the publishers/developers of games that support mods, and thus they aren't wholly reliant on ad revenue to support ModDB.com; mod.io can keep the lights on there if need be. Which is good to know; I've learned over the years that when it comes to the Internet, things aren't likely to stick around long term if they're money pits.

I looked up Proton Drive; their FAQ says that the free tier is 5 GB. Certainly plenty if you are creating units or maps. If you're creating a mod to compete with CCM3, Mega would be a more viable option. But indeed, that is the exception as Civ III mod sizes go.

I haven't heard of Dropbox pulling any shenanigans with making public links non-public, as Google has. Hopefully it stays that way!
