I don't know if it's intended but in my current game I've got a volcano where every tile surrounding it has +48 extra food on it. Seems a bit overkill.

The event is supposed to give +1 food in each plot next to the volcano but one value in the XML had been set wrong and it added +1 food for every possible player hence +50! It has been fixed in the beta for v36 (ie SVN version).
