I hope I'm not starting this thread in the wrong place, but I'm interested in changing my units.gif file. I just want to play around with some of the units...maybe use units from various scenarios in the place of regular ones, just to spice things up a bit. I'd specifically like to change the spy unit and maybe the warrior unit. I know it's easy to do, but I can't seem to figure it out...anybody have any tips?

It's even more simple if you have fw or mge. Just make a new scn. file, change the graphics that you want to change, and exchange that graphics file for the default one. I could do the changes and upload the file here, but there would be the little problem of not having the pictures that you would want. I could get a good spy picture from the world of jules vern scn., but a warrior would be more dificult, as not many scns. use them in the default. Just post the units you want me to change, and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the offer...I'll post some after the holiday...also thanks to ElephantU for the links!

Peace out~! :D

I found it won't work. I tried the idea, but when I loaded it into the original file it turned out all blank. Turned out to be because the new file was a Paint file and not an Immaging file. It workes on FW and probably MGE but I could not get it to work on classic, nor could I find a way to transfer the file properly over to Immaging in order to make it work. Odd how logic doesn't always hold in real life. Sorry for the disapointment.

Actually, if you have a .bmp (paint file) you can make it into a .gif by pasting it into MS Photo Editor and converting it (saving it as a .gif file). Just post the files, and if Prof. Garfield can't do it, I will :)

Well, I came up with many changes for the units, even the warrior and spy. If you would like something different, I will come up with another file.
"Credits": These pictures come from various scenarios from the CFC downloads (especialy Colonies 3) and from scenarios from the civ2 gold edition. I also borrowed many units from Hammer of the North scenario, and that download is found at Apoliton (or however that is spelled) and the link can be found in the PBEM section.

Great, thanks!

Be warned that changing any of the TXT files changes how the game plays, so you need to keep the default files around for things like the GOTMs, PBEMs and Succession games.

EU, I have changed my City.txt file simply to add extra city names. You know, I just hate having to pull out my atlas when Naples rolls around. What's the big deal? Do I have to play with the default City.txt file in a GOTM?

I use a very simple way to edit my GIF file:

I open Units.GIF on Paintbrush (yes, I use the free windows software, and nothing more).

Then, I just copy one of the "empty" squares from the lower part of the file. I choose the BIG zoom, and edit the unit pixel by pixel. The results are awesome.

I created many good units with this method. I'm using none of them now because I got tired of custom units and returned to the standard ones.

Here are some of my former custom units, and you can re-create them in your games:

Kamikaze - It's as strong as a Bomber, but half the price of a Fighter. It explodes in the first attack, just like a missile.

Barbarians - Requires no technology. Ut's a bit more expensive than Warriors, but has 2 attack points.

Urban Militia - It requires Conscription. It's cheaper than Riflemen. Defense 4, attack 3.

Junker - A ship made out of junk (old military material recycled into a new unit). Requires Industrialization. It's just like a cheaper weaker Battleship. Costs only 2 shield lines. Attack 4, defense 2. It's only good against Transports and ancient ships.

Martirs - Imagine how would it be a land missile unit. Well... This unit requires Fundamentalism. Movement: 2. Attack: 12. Defense: 1. It explodes when attacks (just like a missile).

Bomb car - Just like the Martirs. But it's a bit more expensive and moves faster. Movement: 3.

Hovercrafts - It's an expensive unit. The Amphibious element of the Marines with the strenght of an Armor.

Bomb Ship - It's a cheap vessel which appears with Explosives. It's like a missile-ship. It explods when attacking. Movement: 7 Attack 20 Defense 3.
I had the idea of creating this unit when I read about an accident in Canada during World War I, when a cargo ship full of gunpowder and dynamite exploded in the docks. It was the biggest non-nuclear explosion in History. The explosion was so strong, that it created a giant wave, flooding 3 nearby towns. Some pieces of the ship were found 4 kilometers from the coast. Half the population of the town became blind just by looking at the explosion.

Sometimes I also disable nuclear weapons, because they just make the world stop all the wars! Everybody gets so scared of mw when I have nukes that the game becomes boring. Instead of nukes, I prefer to add a new custom unit.
