Whats up with my copy of Civ3?

Try this:
Go into the editor make a random map or whatever and then click of the default settings so you can mess with stuff. Change one thing- say increase a units attack by one. Save it.

Now go play it and after you found your city (but before the second turn!) hit F6 to go to the tech tree and yuo CAN'T SELECT TO RESEARCH OTHER TECHS ANYMORE! You are stuck in this screen unless you were already reasearching something.

What gives!?!?

And even should you have selected something via the pop-up advisor on trun 2 you can no longer CHANGE what you are researching...

I encountered the same problem. After making rules changes I cannot direct my research and am therefore stuck w/ whatever the advisor "suggests". Unfortunately, I have not been able to correct this. Hopefully Firaxis will fix the editor issues with a patch rather than an expansion pack. We'll see. I agree however that this is EXTREMELY frustrating.

This has been driving me crazy for the last couple of days. Glad to know I'm not alone.

What I want to know is, how are the mod creator's getting around this? Or do they have the same problems? I haven't downloaded a mod to check them.

I think I finally figured it out.

Save a copy of the original civ3mod.bic file somewhere else or rename it (since this has all the default info). Then, rename your mod as civ3mod.bic and keep it in the CivIII root directory (i.e., where the original file was located). Then, don't load a scenario, just start a new game. This seems to work. The tech lines and ability to choose techs works OK so long as the game thinks it is using the original file.
