Effects of Game Speed?

What are the differences in game speed. I normally play the game on Prince for the smarter AI, but I am getting tired of creating units that are obsolete in 5 turns so I would like to know if I switch game speed; what will it effect and possibly some examples...

Slowing down game speed increases: building/unit/wonder cost, amount of food needed to gain new city size, amount of culture needed for new social policy or tile expansion, number of beakers needed for new tech, length of golden ages.

So, basically it slows down everything except unit movement speed.

In other words if I play it on marathon the 3 or 4 turns it takes me to build a scout at the beginning will be like 20 turns? That would mean that everything in the game takes longer and the games last longer... why not just play it on quick and get through it quickly? It would be more fun that way.

It's about taste. More time to play with units before they're outdated for one and is probably the biggest reason people play.

I love marathon, long time fan.

The one thing though, is that it takes a much longer time to "react" to a surprise if you were not prepared. For the human, this can be really fun with a few "oh crap!" moments. However, I find that I need to bump up the difficulty at least one higher than my normal level, since the human is able to plan and execute "oh crap" moments on the AI a lot better than it can do on you.

For instance, get the jump on someone with military and they are likely never to recover unless you let them.

Yes.

Some people like a slower game.

But if you're finding the game is a chore, and that you want to get through it quickly, then the game might not be for you.

The main difference on slower speeds is that conquest is more rapid, and its even more difficulty to build any new units once a war starts, and that you spend more time in each era.

I find I prefer Standard, the game is slow enough already for me in other respects.

I feel the standard game is ok for Civ V but I played the longer game in Civ IV to get time necessary to use units. Standard seems to give that time in Civ V much better. It's the only thing I like better now that I think about it :)

I was mainly looking for a game speed that would allow unit production to remain the same while slowing everything else down. That way I can take advantage of things like the Greek hoplites that seem to be awesome, but get out gunned quickly.

I alway play Marathon (and have since it was introduced in Civ IV). And while the more competent players might balk at this, I enjoy it because I like the long game AND for the reason you are stating. Namely, I have time to build up a force and get it to the battlefield before it becomes obsolete. By slowing everything down but the movement speed, it is as though the units now move REALLY fast, but your point of reference is the unit speed.

The net effect of Marathon is that it boosts movement speed. Everything else is slower, so units have more time to explore, make tactical moves during battles, and retreat to heal.

The end result is that Marathon speed makes the game MUCH easier for humans, since it greatly amplifies their edge over the AI in movement tactics AND greatly diminishes the human disadvantage of not knowing where everything is at the beginning of the game.

Moving from Standard speed to Marathon speed is probably the equivalent of a drop of three difficulty levels.

i was always playing standard speed until the current HoF game. I think i'm really getting into epic speed, one thing that im having a hard time getting used to is i seem to forget to build military units...lol

Play Germany, just dont forget to upgrade the brutes :-)

Marathon production times scale up. You will have more time with your units, but if your issue is production vs tech, then it won't help very much.

The best you can do is Valkrionn's economy mod or something like it. The mod increases tech costs by 50% and boosts production by 20%. Or you can try a tile yield rebalancing mod (adds civ4 style workshops, allow 4 hammer mines with Dynamite etc)

One thing with the longer game turns is that you will be clicking Next Turn alot early in the game.

My current game is at the King Level on a Large Pangea map with China and I got me a sweet setup since I am the only one that is located on one side of a range of Mountains.

There are three mountain passes and I plan to set up cities/strongpoints there.

I have one Maritime City State in there as well.

I am playing on Quick and while Rome, Japan and France who are to the far south of me will keep themselves busy killing each other.

I only have Darius who the closest to me with Askia the next closest though I have not yet gotten near him with my 1st scout.

Two of my first Warriors had gotten themselves kill off by the Barbie's Hordes so I am down to my three Archers in my three cities and my last Warrior who is keeping eyes on the Southern pass.

Will build another scout and start on some Horsemen since there is still alot of ground that I have uncovered.

I am going to attempt a Culture win with this game.

Marathon and Epic games means that you really need some nicely specialized cities, particularly for production and churning out units, so you can get them out faster. Standard is much more forgiving if you don't have those specialized cities since it takes far less time to produce units.

+% production buildings, such as forges and windmills, have much more value in long games. If you get one or two cities in an epic game producing units at standard speed, you'll reap the rewards.
