While playing I had an elite unit that had already generated a MGL, generate a second one. I've been around Civ for a while, so I fairly clear on what I saw.

* I had only one MGL generated up this this point in my game.
* I always rename my elite units 'Elite Guard' when they generate a MGL.

I was startled when this unit produced a second MGL.

From the image attached, notice two things:

(1) The unit's name (lower-right box) is already Elite Guard. As it is in the panel in the upper-right - to be named.
(2) There is not an * by the Elite Guard's name in the lower-right box.

To cover my state of mind at the time. I rechecked all my units, searching for THE Elite Guard. Didn't find another * anywhere.

???

Had it been ungraded since being starred? It would keep its name after upgrade unless you changed it again, but it would no longer be starred and would be downgraded to a vet.

[edit] no attachment?

You mean, was it an elite horseman that had generated a MGL. Then, it was upgraded, but demoted to a vet, yet keeping its name?

Well, that's possible. I need to look back through some saves. Could that have always occurred in past versions?

That could happen in vanilla! I used to have cavalry wandering around, still named "Alan's First Knight" after an elite victory as a knight, since you can't rename units in vanilla except when they create leaders.
