Has anyone else seen this happen. I had an embarked invasion force sailing for the Romans . He tries to bomb my embarked tank and my embarked AA gun next to him shot him down?

Well embarked units do defend now...so I don't find it that strange.

Do embarked units (non-AA) do damage to fighters/bombers that attack them?

If yes, then this probably isn't a bug...

If no, then it definitely could be a bug.

All embarked units return fire now... except vs range attacks (and air units are not considered range and have always suffered counterattacks - even when using a Stealth Bomber on Warriors :spear:).

Not sure if the AA intercept chance is meant to work while it's embarked (most other abilities are suppressed like increased sight, mobility, the ability to build improvements - a major annoyance of mine that even if you give workers the ability to build fishing boats they can't do it and if you let them "upgrade" to workboats and do so while embarked you end up with an embarked workboat that can't do diddly... not even unembark itself :gripe:) so I'm surprised intercept works... not upset about it though, I could see them setting up the AA guns on the transport, heh.

The AA gun should have a 50% penalty when embarked, just like the combat strength of embarked units is reduced.

I think that's a bug. The main purpose of the carrier is to provide AA protection via fighter planes. I suppose a carrier does it 3 times better though.

Maybe it's not such a bad idea. AA units are marginally useful as is. Anything that makes them more useful is welcomed -- I guess.

I think this is a bug, too - or at least, it should be!

As mentioned by NukeAJS: If you want to have air protection for your naval invasion force, mix in a carrier with fighters and/or some destroyers.

Embarked units should only be able to defend while being on their way to another land mass. Everything else would render said AA-ships less usefull and therefore lead to a less interesting game.
(So: NO, I don't welcome an increased usefulness of landbased AA units by all means!)

PS:
To make AA units more usefull in my games, I increased range of mobile SAM from 2 to 3. I find the effect extremely fun. Especially, as most AIs love to build them.

Do destroyers still have AA abilities now that they are melee?

Destroyers still possess Interception (40)

If you look at WW2 photos of embarked land units being carried on amphibious craft like LST's, you will see that the land AA guns (50 cal quad and 37/40mm mostly) are indeed deployed on the decks of the LST's, ready for use in their primary role even though embarked. This was also true of German AA guns embarked on their Siebel ferries in the Mediterranean, e.g. during the evacuation of Sicily, where AA guns up to 88mm were set up and successfully used to defend against air attacks. So there is historical and technical precedent for this.

Yes they do, but it's fairly little since unless you are playing Songhai, the base strength of embarked units is now like 50% or something (might be less not 100% sure)

I belive you!
It is hard to argue against a "real world argument" - especially, if it is one of the rare cases, where game rules seem to match real world.

Nevertheless, I think that it lessens the importance of said ships and should be changed/fixed. Even, if it is only for gameplay reason.

But granted, this is a matter of personal taste!
