On the road again...
Greetings once again, citizens of Phoenatica! It is with great honor, and with the permission of our (soon to be) Foreign Affairs Advisor, that I officially open the Apolytonian Embassy here in Phoenatica.
Using SETI, we can utilize this thread to its fullest extent and learn much from each other. I should hope that this Embassy becomes a gateway to our Apolytonian Empire, and a source of news and information that can enlighten you to our ways.
To begin, I'd like to highlight some of the more important information that will best describe our nation and its ways:

Government:
Although the Apolytonian government is considered by many to be a dictatorship (as we have yet to discover more advanced forms of government), it really operates under a democracy not unlike your own. Elections for new offices are held once per month, and terms can be repeated twice, consecutively, only once. There are currently two executive positions and seven ministries, which are as follows:

President: MrWhereItsAt

Vice President: UnOrthOdOx

Minister of Science: Apocalypse

Minister of Foreign Affairs: Togas

Minister of the Military: UberKruX
(this position is more commonly referred to as "Supreme Military Commander")

Minister of the Economy: Donal Graeme

Minister of Imperial Expansion: Will 5001

Minister of Public Works: WhiteBandit

Minister of City Planning/Development: GodKing

In addition to these ministries, Apolytonian Government also contains a Court (which is usually simply referred to as 'The Court'). The workings of the court can be read about in detail in this thread. The ministers are Epistax, Trip (the first and former President), jdjdjd, Captain, and notyoueither. The full report on how Court/Government operate are detailed in our Code of Laws (much like your Constitution, but more primitive).

The Citizenry:
Any and all potential citizens are required to register themselves in this thread, so that they may be added to the oft-updated Member List. Due to some *cough* complications with recent elections, we have been trying to figure out a way to have elections open to only registered citizens. MarkG (our administrator) has helped with this to a degree.
Once a new citizen joins the ranks of Apolytonia, his/her best bet is to pick up the latest .SAV file from the Current Executive Report. By reading the thread they can check the current status of the game. New citizens are also encouraged to join one of Apolytonia's many independently-based, non-affiliated citizen groups, which are as follows:

Culture Club: Although now considered by many to be defunct, the Culture Club (founded by punkbass2000) encouraged the cultural development of Apolytonia, rather than pure military buildup.

Thinker's Guild: I believe this group is still in operation. Founded by ThePlagueRat, the Thinkers don't support any particular political stance, but rather encourage increased debate on the subjects of economics, politics, and science.

The War Academy: Without question the most influential citizen's group in Apolytonia. Founded by Sir Ralph (the current Imperial Expansion Minister), the War Academy has allowed Apolytonia's brightest minds to make their voices heard, and has produced some of the most brilliant military strategies in the Empire's history (such as Case Blue/Teal, the plan we followed which ultimately lead to our recent victory over the Americans).

Machiavelli Institute: While the War Academy tends to focus on military strategy, the Machiavelli Institute places more emphasis on political alignment, diplomacy strategics, and relations with foreign lands. Founded by Robber Baron, the Institute can be credited with starting the long debate about Apolytonia's strategy following the war with America.

The new citizen, in addition to joining one of these citizen groups, may need more information concerning the happenings in Apolytonia. Thus came the creation of newspapers (something you've no doubt had for years). Two such newspapers came and went, abandoned by their editors after an issue or so, but our current newspaper is by far the best we've had. The Jungle Gazette, a newspaper edited by UnOrthOdOx, can provide the most complete look at the who, what, and where of Apolytonia (all the while making the game more fun via traveller's reports written by famous explorer jdjdjd). I highly recommend that any new citizen read all issues of the Gazette, if not only to be caught up, but to be entertained as well.

As I have mentioned before, a popular way to convey one's political beliefs is to join one of Apolytonia's political parties. They are as follows (descriptions here are quoted from the first issue of the Jungle Gazette):

Democratic Industrialists of Apolytonia (DIA):
"The DIA is currently one of Apolytonia's largest unified bodies assembled under common ideals and principles. It believes that the only way to achieve our goals and grasp victory is through a strong industry. They place much emphasis on the importance of internally developing our nation, and seek to balance this vital need with necessary expansion and growth.
The general focus of the DIA currently is to acquire and implement new technologies, and indeed their members have spearheaded the effort to keep our nation technologically advanced. The Democratic Industrialists favor strong cities that can produce wonders, more improvements, military, wealth, and science.
The subject of war is something of high concern among members of the DIA assembly. They have stated, "war is a tool to build our empire, but like all tools, it has a place and function, and cannot solve all our problems." To the DIA, war is the road taken when our country is threatened or there is no peaceful solution to achieve our goals. The DIA does not forbid war, rather it considers it a tool used to build our nation.
In short, the Democratic Industrialists are Apolytonians who desire to keep the power of decision-making with the people. They believe in being balanced and moderate, and are always striving to gain new understanding."

United Front Coalition (UFC - currently there are two factions to this party, the Imperialists and the Hawks):

The Imperialists:
"The mission of the Imperialist Party is to bring Apolytonia from the depths of the jungle that we’ve been placed into, and then out into the world. We support expansion of our empire, be it through war, or peace. Our goal is to create strong infrastructure and military to place our nation as leader in all areas. This will serve to provide us a position of power in the world, the ability to choose our own course, and freedom from being forced down a road to victory.
Science is critical to our success. We believe in trading when it will prove to further advance our own science, and believe that, when possible, we should hold onto any technology that is an advantage over our rivals. Once our research is superior to the AI, we should only trade when it benefits us, and preferably only obsolete techs.
We see war as a tool to further expand our borders. To this end, careful plans and consideration should be given to each war effort, to ensure both our success, and the best land is taken. Capturing cities is the most desired outcome of war, thereby gaining territory and resources. We understand, however, that some cities cannot be captured safely, and will raze when it poses too great a danger to culture flip. Wars should always be fought quickly, decisively, and with the best available technology. Our main advantages lay within our ability to control, master, and wield this to maximum potency.
While we see war as a tool, peace is a tool as well. There is a time and place for war, just as there is for peace. War is expensive. Units are expensive. We don't want to lose more than we gain. Therefore, we will always strive to obtain power through peace, rather than war.
We will work to bring continuity and cooperation to the government by working with other groups. We firmly believe in the democratic process and will strive to keep power with the people through polls and discussions. When we all work together, there are none who will be able to stand in our way.
The Imperialists salute you all."

The Hawks:
"Our mission is to assure that our nation will be in a position to allow AS MANY victory types by end game as possble. This requires strong, aggressive military action, especially early, to ensure ourselves a position where Domination and Conquest are possible. Building cultural improvements and Wonders will be done in the times where we are either at peace, or our military is deemed adequate to it's task. Once we have built our nation, we should rotate military with cultural building to assure our dominance in all areas.
We believe science should focus on what is most needed at the time, be it a wonder tech, or a military advance. Trading tech should preferrably be done in return for other tech or needed resources. Trading away tech for cash should only be done when it is either a dire need, or would cripple a rival's economy, thereby giving us a further lead.
We promote and advocate wars that can be won, be they to gain territory, resources, or simply to slow an opponent or deny resources. We DO NOT advocate prolonged wars that will strangle our economy and resources. Before declaring war, our nation should have a clear view of the objectives already in place. There are many civ's out there who will challenge our dominance, carefull planning and adaptation will be required for the military to succeed. We support capturing cities when possible and razing when neccessary.
We welcome opposing views and parties, as competition leads to greater strength. Debate and votes are essential to our society, and we will leave major decisions on what is best to the people, as they are the true strength of Apolytonia. While we may oppose others views, we realize that the enemy lies without, and not within, and will work to achieve a cooperation between parties to meet the greater good. We believe in the Democratic process and will actively work to ensure the people's will is carried out."

I'd like to conclude this initial onslaught of information with a decree to all Phoenaticans: please feel welcome to come and join our nation! We are always looking to increase our numbers, and gain any new ideas that new citizens always bring. Just remember to take it easy on our forums, as we have no "subforums" (you people truly are advanced...).
I will soon (as in, tomorrow) update the Embassy thread with the latest news from Apolytonia (though I warn you it won't be as elaborate as you can find it in the Jungle Gazette), and I'll also include maps of our world, along with a look at our TWO flags.

well said!

i demand diplomatic immunity for the ambassador (and myself if possible :D )

edit: make that my ambassador :D

Just to let you know, I stopped by to say hi.

Wonderfull device, this SETI thing is. Much more efficient than our messenger monkies, although not nearly as cute. Perhaps we shall build one in our glorious nation one day. You have a most interesting form of government here. Perhaps some day we shall incorporate some of you ideas into our government. Excelent summery Edrix of our civ.

Welcome to Phoenatica. As you can see, we're currently in the middle of our elections. Our presidential race, too, is very close.

The Foreign Affairs Advisor of Phoenatica greets the honourable ambassador of Apolytonia. We hope your embassy is most comfortable and will allow you to effectively pursue your foreign relations with us.

While we are closing in on our final chapter, we should aim to continue strong foreign relations with Apolytonia even if we are reborn. I hope you consider your embassy in Fox Nest (our capital) and our wonderful lands here a home away from home.

 Ahhh, I made an official post. I'm so proud of my humble paper...

A few minor corrections, however. The Jungle Gazette would not be the paper it was today without my CO-editor, and partner, Tassadar5000. His input and creativity have been quite a boon to our production. Plus we also rely heavily on public submissions, such as those from jdjdjd. And you guys don't want to miss the next edition on WED. We WON!!!

Maybe you and Tassadar can have a jungle Gazette in both of are nations?
We can't seem to keep are reporters around.

How am I to travel to your lands? I only know of this set tea device that I have been taught to feed the banana leaves into. Besides, I barely have time for the one paper. However, I am looking for a place that could distribute it in Phoenatica. I understand there are many sublands, what was it called, anyway, different sections to choose from. Where can one find info on all of them?

Just to help out a little here, UnOrthOdOx, that device you are communicating through is called the SETI. If you would like to get an idea of what it looks like, there is a new painting of it in the Phoenatica National Art Museum. By the way, SETI stands for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. This seems to have been successful.

Here are some links for more Apolytonian information (i.e. current events):

- After our victory over the Americans (which I will talk about briefly), a debate naturally began concerning our plans for war (or lack thereof). Our next target, if we have a target at all, would seem to be France, though some think that we should build on what we already have and improve our infrastructure. The debate can be found here.

- In the event that we do go to war with France, Apolytonian citizen OPD had an excellent plan laid out for us. You can read about it here. Essentially, it involves building many cheap warriors and then upgrading to swordsmen (I believe you used this tactic in an earlier war, perhaps with different units).

- I know I promised maps for you, but I haven't really had the time in the past day or so to throw something together in Paint Shop Pro. However, we have a great thread that has a few good looking maps available which show our situation quite accurately. Credit goes to Spiffor, our Minister of the Economy.

- As some of you most likely know, Shaitan established the Phoenatican Embassy in Apolytonia. Pay a visit, as it seems to be a good place for CFC folks to introduce themselves to the Apolyton crowd (and just for the record, I have no idea why Ninot requested that the thread NOT be topped. There doesn't seem to be any clear reason for this, and I see absolutely no reason why it shouldn't be up there. Hopefully he'll come to his senses).

- To get a look at the many options we had for a national flag, go to this thread. I believe the current flag is Trip's design (it's about halfway down).

- We also have a flag specifically designed for war. The development of our War Flag is detailed in this thread. I think it's rather cool looking, if rather odd - a combination of a banana and a shark. ;)

- Of course, what with flags raised and Apolytonian national spirit high, we've also decided to give ourselves a national anthem. Take a look at the choices there (I voted for Ode to Joy myself, but there are other great options as well).

- I'd also like to remind anyone who goes to the 'Poly forum that it's highly recommended that you register as a citizen of Apolytonia prior to voting in any of the polls. It only takes a minute, and we'd gladly accept any new citizens that wish to join us (and it's fine to be a citizen of Apolytonia AND Phoenatica - you don't have to give up your allegiance to join us!).

And now for the latest news in Apolytonia (July 30, 925 BC):
VICTORY. You may have read about this in the Jungle Gazette, but our war with the Americans is finally over. No longer do we have to live in complete fear of the future - there is actually some degree of hope. In the space of six turns, we declared war on America, captured Washington, captured New York, and received Atlanta and Philadelphia during the peace agreements. We only lost two Archer regiments in the process! :goodjob:
Immediately after the peace treaty was signed, Washington was renamed 'Del Monte' (in keeping with the banana theme we have going), and New York was renamed 'Gaia' (in keeping with... nothing. I guess it just sounded cool). We're now looking for our next opponent, which will most likely be France due to their proximity. Needless to say, with our new military strategy, we'll be ready to attack, and then they'll be sorry they ever... decided to... found their cities remotely near us. :D :rocket: :ninja:

Ah, Wednesday again. That means a fresh edition of pressed banana leave goodness in the form of The Jungle Gazette This edition we cover the end of the war and various other debates. Plus the continuing saga of jdjdjd, and a new log from godking. Don't miss out, buy yours today!!!
