end game frustrations...

Dont betray people and they wont betray you. Cause what goes around comes around. Try to avoid war with everyone as well.

As long as they are not a menace for your own Civ... and the best close AI player looks like the exterminated AI.
I am not the warmonger tipe, but I get sick when I have an AI player close. They don't stop, they cheat you and they are always trying to destroy you. So, 6 days style...

The AI is a real bugger in civ2mpg, I shall deal with them only until I am #1 civ, and then begin my pre-emptive strikes.

I quit playing on large maps and use a med. size now with a small land mass. This keeps my no. of cities smaller and is less time consuming.

Well, not exactly ture. I play all my games and maintain a spotless reputation, but the AI will always sneak attack you when they feel you are too threatening. It's just a style of play for them.

The only thing I have seen reputation do is make it where the AI won't make peace with you, but they usually will break a peace treaty at any time. You can even 'make' them attack you so you can maintain your spotless reputation.

Definately not true! The A.I. will attack you no matter how "nice" you are to him and in spite of your spotless reputation. In the end game, post 1800-1850 or so, the only good A.I. is a dead one. keep pumping out the panzers, howitzers, and spies and wipe him out. even if you intend to win by spaceship, you still need to hammer the A.I. into submission, or at least into a corner so he will leave you alone.

At the end everybody agrees: be strong, good maner but put one big eye

on them. They always attack... Specially if you are winning they try to break you to avoid it, at any price, so...

I'm playing on Classic Civ II so that may influence things a bit as someone mentioned, but the amount of aggressive attention I get at the end of a game does depend on A. the difference between the other Civs' technological development and mine, and B. how much of a bastard I've been in the game, diplomatically-speaking. I've found the closer we are technologically, the more aggressive they become: building cities in my parameters, stealing secrets, and sneak attacks. And nothing p*sses me off more than their navies cluttering up my sea coasts - and with those piddly destroyers!

As for your reputation, keeping it spotless will not lower the liklihood you'll be attacked, but having a dramatically besmirched reputation will increase the liklihood of being constantly attacked to about 100%.

Otherwise, I'm afraid Aristonico's comment

So, at the end, the only way to win is crush'em all...

pretty much sums up the situation.

Perhaps the difference may be in what level you're playing? Is the AI "gentler" in the lower levels?

I also noticed the the A.I. civs by 1800-50's sign pact against me so by 1900 there I'm always in a total war against 6 civs that are in peace with each others...
The AI fascination with starting wars (which is kinda stupid -"let's start a war with the biggest, meanest bastard on the planet!") is what originaly drove me to my love of "Total War
It makes me think of 1984 by G.Orwell and Goebbels just before Barbarossa asking the german people if they wanted a global and total war...He received a great Heil Hitler!...

One time I sent a space ship...
