Why is it that my opponent civs never attack eachother? Does war ultimately depend on what I do?

I have had my opponents declare war on each other, even destroy another. You may not notice it. You won't get a notice from you foreign advisor telling you of the war declarations unless you have a embassy with the nations involved.

MTheil3508 is correct. The AI civs generally declare war against each others just as often as they declare war against you, but you will not be told unless you have an embassy with at least one of them.

When you discover a new continent in the middle ages, you will probably see that some of the cities are owned by another civ than the original builder, an indication of a war you've never been told about.

And should you play on a huge map, it may very well be that the AI civs don't think it's needed to declare war. They can expand just as well. Once there's no room to expand anymore but still a need to do so, things get messy.

Also the AI won't make the 'mistake' to leave a city undefended (or defended with a weak unit). That's an important trigger for the AI to declare war and this trigger won't go off AI vs AI.

what difficulty are you on cause I wallowed on the easier difficulties for ages and they never attacked me let alone one another but when I moved up to Regent they were alot more agressive.

My game at the moment is pretty tense. Its like pre WW1 Europe on a Global scale. two AI's started to attack each other (for reasons known to only themselves) but each had a MPP with someone else who in turn had a MPP with someone else so now my world is split in two as about 6 civ's on each side kick lumps out of each other.

NB- Just another note I need to ask on a (slightly) related subject. the Spanish (on the other "team" was fighting me. and they made peace with about 2 of my "team" but not me. they then bombarded one of my squares and everyone turned on them. Does Bombard lower the reputation like a Nuke? but on a lesser scale?

(correction - when I say everyone turned on the Spanish I mean even Civ's that were allied with them in war against us.)

- On higher levels, you do see more of the AI's fighting each others... There can only be one...! :)
- Don't you love it when a world war starts in the game? I luv seing the AI just weakening themselves
- As for everyone turning against Spain: did you have any MPP's with some civ, that might had just signed MPP with someone else, etc? the 2 of your team probably would redeclare war on spain if you had an MPP with them. Or even more, they might had signed peace with Spain's allies, and pushed them into battle... or just that everyone saw a good opportunity to wipe Spain, either it was too strong, or getting too weak :) I had this once in a game where WW1 started, two civs got smashed from their own allies at a certain point, one after the other, etc...
