The English UU should be Longbowmen. England is the only country that ever effectively used longbowmen, and they were almost soley responsible for the near destruction of France in the 100 yr war.

The current English UU is not worth building, who needs a ship with a bonus of 1? Its not worth building as it stops you from upgrading it at a later point. Besides the Spanish always had better ships then the English until the 17-18th Century, which is well past when this ship appears to be from.

Or alternatively, English currently have by far the best special forces in the world, perhaps the English UU should be something that represents this? Say a hugely powerful ground troop with a good movement, and the ability to infrastrate an enemy city and destroy improvements, (at a risk) then be redrawn when the player wants to move him to the next city. Obviously he should also be hugely expensive as countries dont just build masses of special forces. This could be a variation of paratrooper, which is what the SAS effectively are.

Saying that the "English have by far the best special forces in the world" is a bit of a reach and subjective to national pride. I for one say that the US has the best and I am sure folks in other nations would say theirs are the best. Either way, I would not wish to get on the wrong side with any of those men (and women). But back to the subject of your post...

I agree that teh Longbowman should be England's UU. In an age when mounted Knights ruled the battefields the English beat the best the French army could throw at them thanks in large part to a huge contingent of longbowmen. I think that the programers choice the Man-o-War as the English UU because it is more "in time" with what they consider the English Golden Age. Back when the "sun never set on the British Empire". It is a decent choice for a uu but poorly implemented.

I think they also wanted to assure that England is a sea power (they were!), so, before asking for a new uu (which the longbowman would be the best choice!) wait for how they want to change the naval system, I think.

but ok :) mfG mitsho

Unless the era when the Man O War is used in is made longer and naval combat is improved i dont see the point with sticking them with such a crapy UU. Anyways im for more UUs per Civ so i would say the Longbowmen and Man O Wars but that would present a problem, Man O Wars and Longbowmen have a somewhat over lapping eras, the Man O War would come in at a time when the Longbowmen could still be used effectively (note i mean in the game not in RL) so there in presents the problem

in almost ALL other games the longbowmen is the english special unit or UU or whatever you wanna call it. Anyway I agree that it was the English who really used longbowmens to their full potential and it should bge their UU

Multiple UU's is always a good idea, just a little harder to balance.

I agree with Longbowman, Man-o-war, Spitfire, and possibly another.

These are just random Units that have been exceptionial or note worthy of the English for possible use for the english UU

British Red Coats-MusketMen
Harrier-Jet Fighter(before anyone says it, the English devolped the Harrier not the US)
Lancaster Bomber-Bomber
Heavy Calavary- Late Medival Age Calavary- English used them well
thats all i got now but there are more but im tired

Note i would say Snipers but that is a speicalist unit which isnt used in vaste numbers and therefor cant be used

I think the current UU suits England well. Since they moved Ironclads to a deadend it's more practical than before but maybe they should power up the unit just a little bit.

The whole thing about that any country should have somekind of super specialforces is just ridicules.

Why not give each country two UU's? One early, one late? This would take considerble imagination on some countries, but on most it would be very easy to develop...

but it would result in many many many unique units, and therefore you would rarely see some normal units (example knight or swordmen where there exist many uu's).

and besides, keep in mind that civ4 is a totally new game, not a addon of civ3. So it might be that the man-o-war is much much much more worthy... ;)

Well! England made its empire during the age of sail! I really think their special unit should be a naval unit.
My choice number 2 and 3 are the Longbowman, and the Spitfire-fighter!

You do have a good point about the Longbowmen, but from a CIV3 gaming perspective, I think the man-o-war is perfect because as a seafaring power, it's better to have a naval UU.

And really who needs longbowmen in the Civ3? It's the Babylonian bowmen, totally useless!

Im saying two UU at the same time so a man o war and the red coats(they did well just not in america). This would allow a better Golden Age for each Civ

Couldn't have said it better myself.
I also think that every seafaring civ ought to have a naval UU.

I apologize for hijacking your message, Sealman, I got to learn to quote messages properly...

i think that civs should have their own units for most things i.e. the usa would have G.I.'s not infantry or England would Privates but if england had to have to have a uu even though there are so many to choose from but from a modern england point of view i would have to choose the S.A.S. Even U.S. Generals agree that when you need something done you use the S.A.S.
BUT from a historical view not the longbow seeing as it was a welsh invention, the traditional Tommy :ar15: perhaps they always seemed to pull it off even with mad odds and if anyone needs convincing look at N.Africa or D-Day
and a perk of more leaders, military and scientific appearing (D-Day soldiers would have been slaughtered if it wasnt for Montey and british scientists invented penicillin, radio, the submarine, tv, computers-not very known but was the used for enigma, the list is endless)
P.S. Why are the English so useless in civ 3? We DID have the biggest empire in human history you know!!!
