Enough with the little things, now, let's talk AI

people has spent a lot of energy talking about worthless stuffs, such as the naming of lame chinese cities, or how they speculate religion shall work, or the coolness of having steam locomotive moving around the map randomly as eye candy.
I think everything is meaningless without a good AI. I care less about MP because in all my life I have played only a half MP game. It took so long and was so boring. civ is essentially a single player game.
I want good, interesting AI, that can handle all of the options in the game, and not cheating.

Moderator Action: As with the other thread - DO NOT continue with your anti-china trolls.

Warned.

What a demand without anything offered yourself. Why don't you start? How do you think to improve AI?

AI is always talked up but never delivered very well... so I'm hoping for lots of eyecandy this time- I have SOLD out! (See my thread about the little train). Thatstuff would make me happy and they CAN deliver it... AI? Sure would make me happy... but they CAN'T deliver it.

BTW: "Stuff" is never plural by -s. Unless you mean the present tense verb, like "He stuffs food into his mouth." :crazyeye:

About the AI cheating, think about this:
Your playing a game on a computer against the same computer. That computer generated the map and interprets all of your moves.

The AI will always cheat.

Not if it has morals!

This sounds like a breakfast cereal ad. "Civ IV Crunch, now with Morals!"

Just because the computer processed the data doesn't mean the AI will have access to it when deciding what to do.

And what do you mean by "interprets all of your moves"?

He means if you ask for your unit to move North, the computer may interpret that as asking for its hand in marriage, and slap you, calling you "fresh!" and other horrible things.

Then declare war on you. Then turn itself off.

That would be a "wrong" interpretation, and probably a bug to be worked on, however.

Also, the computer can interpet your dance moves for you... which is an awsome feature. "Sorry, that won't get your girls, try this." Then it will demonstrate chick pick-up moves.

Instead of starting a lame thread about AI's capabilities, we should give some valuable input. So here is my idea: make the AI better!

(I hope, my suggestion was of the same quality as the initial post?)

Seeing the AI respect your borders, put more emphasis into naval warfare, and getting rid of the entire rep hit concept and replacing it with something more realistic and fun would be worth the game alone.

Of course I agree that we should discuss the AI. But I don't think we should talk about how Firaxis should improve it, since it will probably not change anything they are doing now. Instead we should talk about how we might want to change it when Civ4 comes out, complete with the AI SDK. Modding a whole array of AI personalities, "difficulty levels," and other behavioral variants would be very cool. Are there any AI mods anyone wants to see?

such as the naming of lame chinese cities
you should consider yourself lucky not to get banned for such remarks. not everyone here is american or european. show some respect to other people as well. Or would you like it if we suddenly spell New York let's say Neu York (as it would be literally in German)

and it's something Firaxis can easily handle. talk about AI :crazyeye: I am not a programmer but I guess it is something pretty complex and surely more difficult than renaming cities.

we need quality posts, thanks

Pot. Kettle. Black.

What I'd like to see is the AI act like future HOF players (when Civ4 comes out) on higher levels. Like if they were to change the AI for Civ3 the higher levels should know how to set up a Settler Factory, know that irrigating grassland in despot is useless, abuse artillery, and even being able to move their settler to a better start. Where as lower difficulty levels should act more like cheiftan players making the stupid mistakes of irragating grassland in depost, never changing the scinece slider, and using warriors to try and attack pikeman.

Difficulty levels should be based on smartness of AI not production bonuses and free units.

vbraun - agreed!! That sounds fair. But I suppose there is some sort of limit as to how "smart" the AI can be anyway, so I guess they'd also need to let it "cheat" in order to compete with a human on the higher difficulty levels. After all, this is a computer, not a human being.

I definitely agree with u.

What I don't like especially in Civ3 is that difficulty scaling is not done according to AI's

cleverness but it's cheating abilities!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, start thinking about how you would improve the AI anddo it since this time Firaxis is letting you do just that.

On the topic of "AI cheating" there are various things things that AI doesn't have to know that it appears to know in the C3C. Location of submarines is one example that comes to mind. The AI seems to know exactly where they are, and it doesn't have to know about this. That has nothing to do with the AI and the game running on the same computer. This is unrelated to AI getting a bonus in money or combat or rate of growth for being AI versus a human of hopefully higher intelligence.

I would definitely like to see the naval componant of the AI to be entirely redone. Naval actions were almost non-existant. I would like to see something similar to the naval battles in the Pacific during WW2. To have the AI put more emphasis on using their ships CORRECTLY.
