Jeezus, arent these similar to play by mail chess games? This would take forever I think, no? Why not just play a regular internet game with each other?

There are a lot of reasons why PBEM is more attractive than live.

1.) Time Zone differences is the biggest factor. We can play opponents globally this way.

2.) Live MP games tend to be tiny maps with everyone playing to win before the end of the ancient ages.

3.) A live MP game on a map this size would end up being unstable for either the server or clients.

3.) One can take their time and plan out their moves.

4.)This also allows you to walk away from Civ instead of sitting in front of the computer for 10 hours playing just one more turn.

It'd be more convenient if you guys played posting the turn files in the thread, for the next player to download at his convenience; it's easier to keeop track of whose turn it is when there are more than 2 players.
