No matter what I do,my civ game doesn't start up. If I try compatibility mode, not even the error appears, and normally I get the "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005)" error code. I've re-installed 5 times, gone through 3 search engines, browsed close to 20 forums and I ended up here. If someone can help I'd be happy.

  • Win7
  • Home Premium
  • Vision AMD
  • "High Performance" Setting
  • *All specs above needed *
  • I've got it to work before and now...
Can someone reply soon,I really want to go through the Merchants & Smugglers era again.

Welcome to CFC :).

It could be, that parts of your hard drive are corrupted, and that civ has been installed in that area.
To test this, first uninstall civ.
Then hit ctrl+R, type in chkdsk c:/f (under the assumption that c is the hard drive where Civ was installed), let that run (if Windows is on the same part of the harddrive, the computer has to be rebootet). Afterwards, install civ again and test, if it runs.

Sorry but it didn't work. I'm glad someone replied though.
BTW,chkdsk is a virus control utility, right? Couldn't I use a normal virus scanner for it?

No, it's not an antivirus, it's a build in hardware checking tool (somehow).

Okay, other questions:
- Do you have enough disk space? Please check it.
- Where did you install civ? In the default path or into a custom one? Related here: Steam version?

I have about 271GB free after I installed it,I think it's enough. Civ4 is installed in the Default place and I don't have steam.

Does Civ 4 have a limit to how many times you can install it? I have to wipe my hard drive every so often and I often re-install it.

PS.sorry if i'm necroposting/double posting/bumping and it isn't allowed.

Possibly your CD/DVD drive has a problem and isn't copying the files to your hard drive correctly. Do you have a second CD/DVD drive that you could use to install the game? Another possibility is that the installation CD has gone bad. Does it have any visible scratches or other marks? Can you copy the installation disc(s) to your hard drive and install the game from there? Another idea, if you haven't already tried it, is to install the latest patch to see if that helps. The Civ 4 patches may be found here. One other question: Were you ever able to install Civ 4 on your current system? If not, then you might want to see if a firmware update is available for your CD/DVD drive.

No,no second drive but there are some marks if I hold it up to the light.

Basically,It installs well and when I go to play it,error 0xc0000005! It worked before and I haven't reformatted my computer. The executable shows up in the Task Manager's Process window and then the error happens. IF I try in compatibility mode,it doesn't show up at all,no error...nothing(as stated I have windows 7) it closes itself a few seconds later. As of now,it's installed and I'm trying the patch, praying to whatever divine being you believe in it works.

C'est le fonctionnement de working,it. Enfin je peux avoir mon amusement !

The thing about the patch, you're right. I am an idiot for not even thinking about it,thank you so much for that "if it were a snake it would've bitten me" answer.
