Error in GOTM 37?

Dear forum members and civ experts :)

I have recently received a copy of Civ3 and the Conquest expansion from my friend WackenOpenAir (because he retired from this game) and he recommended me to start playing GOTM 37 as my first game.

All is good and well, however, once I reach 3000BC an error message pops up that reads:

"Load Error
Error reading file
Missing entry in "text\PediaIcons.txt": ANIMNAME_PRTO_Spartan_Hoplite
The game will now exit."

This error happened in the "Open" variation of the Gotm, while I did not encounter it in the "Conquest" one...

Is there anyone on this forum who has experienced the same error and perhaps knows a solution for this?

Wacken has retired? :shake: Another of the big dogs leaves the game...
But as long as there are new players coming in it's not the end of the world. Welcome!

This is your first ever game of Civ3 and he sent you to play deity level? What a sadist! But he's right, it's a beautiful start this GOTM37.
I've got up to 1350bc without the error you had. It's odd to get it at that date - I would expect it to be because you met a hoplite, but Greece isn't even in the game.

Anyway, you should check that you are (a) playing the Play The World expansion rather than the original Civilization 3 or the Conquests expansion, and (b) playing with the final patch. If that doesn't help, and the mods don't notice this thread, send them an email.

Paperbeetle,

I have installed the update from this page, "Conquests v1.22 Full Patch (24,3MB)".

I am playing the Play The World expansion (with the 'nukes' loading screen).

However, I did not install the "Play the World Patch US v1.27f(11.21 MB)" patch because of the top line on that page stating that I only have to install the latest patch. Perhaps I need that one as well?

One more thing that I'd like to point out is that the error seems to be caused by a file that is part of the Gotm mod-pack found here.

Anyway I hope someone can help me with this. In the meantime I will try to play a Deity game on a random map in Conquest. :king:

AutomatedTeller,

Maybe you meant to say that Wacken retired from the Sgotm series? Because Gotm 37 was run a long time ago already.. ;)

I do think he intends to quit Civ3 completely though... Well, let's see how long he can resist the urge.

Do you have a non english copy? I remember I had some problems since I am using a German version and kind of managed to get a mix up between english and german language files.

Yes, I'm confident that the Conquests v1.22 patch will also patch your Play the World to v1.27.
Also I think the GOTM mod pack isn't required for #37; they only used it for about a year, all before my time (my first GOTM was #39).

IIRC the Spartan Hoplite was an added unit for Civ3 Vanilla that duplicated the Numedian Mercenary, Carthage's UU. This was done during the time before Conquests came out when the GOTM tried to run Civ3 Vanilla and PTW as equivalent. According to the Game Details page for GOTM37 (a rather Fun one!), no downloads are necessary for PTW.

You should check that you are running the PTW executable. There should be a Play the World directory under the main Civ3 directory (\\Program_Files\Infogrammes_Interactive\Civilization3\PTW , or something like that) . (I'm on travel so I can't check directly.) You can run the executable directly from this location.

Check to see that it has 1.27 in the corner of the initial screen.

Conquests should insclude and install PTW 1.27 by default, but it wouldn't hurt to download and install the update if you still can't run. But I'm pretty sure the problem is that you are running the Vanilla Civ3, and there's something askew with the GOTM Mod install; otherwise it wouldn't be asking for Spartan Hoplites.

To all who responded,

I think I've solved the problem now, although its cause is still a mystery to me.

What I did is open the PediaIcons.txt in the ...\PTW\text folder and add a line for the Spartan_Hoplite (i just copied the line from normal hoplite and added the "Spartan_" part inbetween).

I'm still confused why this particular game would ask for that info however (I do use the PTW expansion executable).

No one seems to have mentioned the more likely possibility, that you have downloaded the vanilla version of the start file instead of the PTW one.

I think you're right there AlanH.
The Spartan Hoplite is used by the NeoCarthagians in Gotm 37.
The missing line is patched in a file from the all-in-one installer for the Vanilla version of the game, but this file will not be in the proper folder if I run PTW.

I think this caused the error in my game.
