I hope you guys can help or direct me to someone who can. I just bought Civ 4 today and tried to install it on my computer. After the first disc is done and it tells me to put in the second disk and I press "ok" to start the second disc installation, I get this little error box that reads:
Feature: DefaultFeature
Component:
File:
Error: Catastrophic Failure

then it stops the installing and closes the install shield window. Everything is closed after that, and the game doesn't get installed. My computer meets all the system requirements, so I don't see why it won't install. Please Help Me.

You have a defective disk.

A lot of us have had this exact same problem.

I got lucky and only had to return my copy once to get a working version.
I've heard of some people going thru multiple returns before getting a set of CD's that worked.

Good Luck!

That's a lot for the quick reply. Yeah, from what I've read on here it seems like some other people are having the same problems. Well, I guess I will just have to return and hope for the best.

The game is going back for the last time. I've returned it
multiple times due the catastrophic error problem during
install and I've had enough.

For $50, I expect quality control to be a lot more stringent.

Nice try Firaxis & 2K.

Perhaps the manufacturers could have placed a serial number
or other identifier on the run of disks so bad ones could be
identified...BEFORE we leave the store. Come on guys....show
some customer oriented business practices.

You think you have it bad ....

I bought a copy of civ 4 (which I had to drive 80 miles there and back to get) and it didnt work. So I took it back and got another copy (another 80 miles) that one didnt work either. Next time I brought my friends laptop with me to test it in store (best buy) it took me 4 broken copies instore before I found one that worked. So overall thats 240 miles for a game and 6 different broken copies to find a good one :(. Damn if I didnt love civ games so much I would have said **** it and pirated it.

After playing the demo and enjoying it immensely, I decided to pick up the game at retail. I am now on my second copy (within a two hour time frame) and getting the exact same error.

I called the customer support line for 2kgames the first time the error occurred. They sent an email list of things to try (the usual, shut down unneeded apps, update drivers, make sure cd is clean, etc.). I was told over the phone that if that doesn't work, I have a faulty disk. Nothing worked, back to the store...

Same error with the second copy (and the last from the store). Even tried installing on a different machine (which has two different optical drives). I called 2k back again and their response was "There's nothing we can do. We are aware of the problem, and our engineers are working on a solution, but there's nothing we can do."

Nothing you can do? Great answer, superior customer service. How about you give me a one time download of the cab file(s) on disc two? How about you ship me a legit working copy of the disc? The game is going straight back tomorrow. I really enjoyed the demo, but apparently that's as far as I will get.

How are you getting your money back? The place I bought mine (Best Buy) will only exchange. I am on my second set of discs that do not work, and I am not optomistic.

If your going to best buy borrow a laptop from somone if you can and they will let you test the disks in the store till you find one that works. That's how I ended up having to get one...only took an hour :( lol.

I have the same problem and it is the second set. I think 2kgames really screwed us all and we did not pay $50 for all this mess. How about the time we have to put in to get a "working" copy? Who is gonna compensate us for our precious time?

I do not know if it will help but I have written a complain letter sent to their public relations contact. If we can gather enough frustration and make our voice heard, I believe 2kgames will move A LOT faster in fixing a ridiculous problem like this.

But before that happens, I guess I still have to go to Best Buy AGAIN. Btw, anybody successfully got store credit at Best Buy because of this? Thank you all.

when its installing and it gets to parthenon.bik, this error comes up.

Feature: DefaultFeature
Component: Civ4Component
File: D:\data2.cab
Error: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)

I also have been having the dreaded Catastrophic Failure problem.

I called Take 2's support line, and they gave me some "solution" that they claim is only hours old. Well, it didn't work. Then, they gave me another "solution" that involved all sorts of firmware checks, and other weird stuff that seemed to be prayers on their part to find something to get it to go away.

The bottom line is, they have no answer as of today, and just suggest that when you trade in the disks, you get a copy that has been on the shelf for a while. My question is - how exactly am I supposed to be able to do that?

FINALLY!!!
i found someone with the same problem of me....
I also have rydondant cyclyc problem with CAB2...
as it seems if you try to open that file dyrectly windows says that can not recgnize that kind of .CAB that it may be broken...

Does anybody found solution about THIS problem???

The only solution for a Cyclic redundancy check error is to take the disc back, it is usually the result of a bad burn when writing the disc. There is little you can do with a defective disc.

you say all i need is another disk...yet this game worked fine on my friends comp. perhaps there is some way after all to fix this?

Yea - you guys got off lucky. I live in JAPAN and had the disc sent to me. After waiting for a month to get the game, I can't even play it. It is total BS.

And just think, when you get disks that work, the game doesn't. My disks loaded fine. Then I encountered the dreaded crash after crash. Sometimes with an overload video memory, most of the time with no message. I have a 2.4g P4 and 1m of memory, updated everything, blah blah blah, cut all the resolutions to low, low low and it still is a crash-aholic. I went to the 1.52 download and it only got worse. I sure hope they get this mess fixed. I'm thinking they were trying to meet the Christmas deadline and pushed the disk out the door, DOA.

maybe we can buy one , and download it all again from internet
then we got a licence and also can play our dear civilization.

It's said that "misery loves company." I too have run into that lovely catastrophic failure crapola on Disk #2. At least I now know what to do...it's back to WallyWorld tomorrow to hopefully exchange for a working pair of CD's.[pissed]

I made the exchange at WallyWorld, brought the replacement home, and voila, it now installed correctly. Of course, the 1st time I attempted to play this stoopid thing, it refused to initialize the renderer. Fortunately, I already had the v. 1.52 patch, so I just ran it and now everything works!!

I sent three EMAILS today asking them for a solution to my problem (same as above) I cannot take my game back, the AAFES does not give exchanges or refunds on opened software, this is what I got :
