EU3 Multiplayer

I came back, but it says "game not found" instead of "this game is already in progress " or something like that.

Session Seven - 1467 to 1490

As the sun sets on July 19, 1490, the world is changing. Western Europe thirsts for riches of the new world, and colonists are being sent across the ocean. Spain focuses on conquering natives; England establishes colonies in modern-day Brazil. Burgundy has gone north and taken western Iceland as well as Greenland; Austria has the Azores and the Canaries. All four humans in Western Europe have taken Quest for the New World, and all four seek New World riches.

This is not to say Europe has been uneventful. Austria continues to add to personal unions (not seen on the above maps), with Denmark having recently been coerced into a union. Sweden, France, Brandenburg, and Siena also are in unions, and Savoy was until their annexation earlier this week. Also not showing up well on the map are Austria's vassals across the boot of Italy (save the Pope); Austria is a legitimate Central European power. Even so, Bohemia remains a first-class danger.

Burgundy continued to expand nimbly in Europe. As can be seen in the players' map, Burgundy has several vassals in the western part of the Empire, and also annexed a few territories, such as Westfalen and Nassau. Burgundy's subjugation of Provence lead to a brief war with Austria and Castille, but little blood was spilled outside of Provence itself, it being agreed that a big war would not be beneficial to either side. Perhaps most important for Burgundy, however, was ascenion to Emperorship of the Holy Roman Empire. Two successive Emperors have been Burgundian, dating to 1477.

Castille's main focus this turn has been on colonization, with sufficient conquests to ensure that they are Dishonourable Scum, and will remain so for at least another year at the current rate. Despite the perhaps unscrupulous nature of their conquests, the effectiveness cannot be argued - Central America as well as the coastal parts of the southern U.S. are both now Castillian. Castille has not been inactive at home, as Aragon was finished off this session. Though hardly a surprise - Aragon had been being chipped away at previously - it solidifies the eventual formation of Spain.

England has been in a regency for the last 13 years, but has spent a fair amount of that time colonizing. Northeastern South America is the preferred English territory, and they now have several provinces in that area. Aside from the AI English annexing Berry during a brief absence from METY, England was mostly quiet on the European front. The regency was most gloriously honoured by the founding of England's first colony, Regencytown, in South America. Alas, like all regencies themselves, it was not to last, as the rebels became curiously hostile, rose up, and trashed the settlement. Not to be deterred long-term, however, England did re-establish the colony later on.

The Ottomans finished their misison to Annex Egypt by the end of the turn, adding many provinces in conjunction with that. They also came into war with the Eastern Roman Empire, but as the Romans entered as an ally of Transylvania, did not annex them. Likely most significant on the world scene was the collapse of the Golden Horde. In the early 1480's, Bohemia, who had conquered some Mazovian lands, invaded the Horde and began settling territories. A fear of Bohemia stretching all the way to the Pacific quickly emerged, and the Ottomans thus began more seriously colonizing Horde lands shortly thereafter. Along with increased colonization from Novgorod, this will limit Bohemia to just a few more territories.

Other happenings of note include Mazovia recovering the lands lost to Bohemia by annexing the Teutonic Order, and coring several provinces, thus rendering them stronger than at the end of last session. Hungary has also proven they want to be part of the game, annexing Bosnia and Ragusa. Though they ended up in a war with the Austrians and Ottomans (amongst others), they thus far have avoided conquest, as Austria was more focused on a Danish war, and the Ottomans on their first Timurid invasion in decades.

You guys need to work on your borders.

So Regencyville wasn't worth mentioning? :p

I've added it in (though as I couldn't see it, some details might not be entirely accurate). Also added in that small detail about Castille annexing Aragon.

I just noticed Quint's awesome summary page. Great job, maybe you could put a sentence or two about what happened in the session?

Good idea. I've added a three-sentence-or-less summary of each session.

Are you playing EU3 all of you? Or are you organising a new one. If so, I would want to play, though I am really bad at this game.

We're continuing the current game. I'd be OK with having an additional player as well (although of course there are countries I'd probably rather have be an AI... and I'm sure that's true for some other players as well). The current map is in post 183.

Probably the most recommended choices would be Novgorod or Mazovia. Russia has struggled against the Horde, but Novgorod has emerged as the to-be Russian power. Mazovia has been the heroic nation everyone is rooting for this game. Besides actually being a respectable power, they'd probably be a fantastic choice for gaining friendly relations with the human players.

The other obvious European choice is Bohemia, but if Mazovia is the nation that's likely to yield easy alliances with humans, Bohemia is probably the one that's least likely to yield friendly human relations.

Bohemia has Military Drill/Grand Army/National Conscripts - no surprises there. Mazovia has Grand Army. Novogorod has National Conscripts and Shrewd Commerce Practices. All are currently are engaged in wars, but all will win, barring absolute disaster (or so it appears from my vantage point).

Denmark/Sweden/Brittany/Brandenburg/Armangac/France/all of Italy except the Pope and Sicily/several German minors near Burgundy/all of North Africa are all either vassals of in unions with human players. And I might be forgetting one or two.

There's also the non-European powers, although it might not be the best idea if you're really bad at the game. Their position more or less follows what you'd guess from the map. It doesn't appear as any are on the brink of collapse, apart from all the Hordes except my good neighbor Nogai, with whom I enjoy +95 relations despite numerous wars and deep distrust. But joining a Horde nation in 1490 would probably be disastrous proposition even for a fantastic player...

Well, you have to admit, it would be impressive for a human player to do that well as Mazovia, too. But true, it is even more impressive that the AI Mazovia has done that well.

Is that an aye or a nay vote for allowing additional players? I'm guessing Turquoiside probably won't be posting here since he still only has 999 posts (what could the 1000th post possibly be being saved for???).

Yes well welcome to the Great Northern Polar Bear Country of Canada, where we do things differently from you Americans :P

Session Eight included Burgundy, England, and the Ottomans for the entire session, and Austria and Castille for parts of the session (sorry, alpav, we weren't checking the thread - I don't think anyone had seen your message here until now).

It is now June 6, 1519, and the Reformation is well under way in Europe. No one else ever posted a picture, so here is the Reformation from a Sunni point of view:

As you can see, those countries that have embraced the Reformation are enduring much religious strife, while METY as England/Great Britain has the most Protestants of any human player.

The world map looks as follows:

The maps of the British and Ottoman Empires, along with the Kingdom of Burgundy, looks like this:

The Reformation was one of the key events in Europe, with Sweden and Switzerland becoming Protestant, and Hungary becoming Reformed. Several smaller states have changed religion, too, and it's likely that more states will change religion in the coming years as well.

Austria was primarily led by the AI this session (from 1496 or so onwards), and despite the best preparations made by Turquoiside, it wasn't the greatest session. Immediately after being left in AI hands, Austria declared war on the Pope. This was eventually led to Bavaria being forced to release several states. Many of the states under personal unions with Austria were not pleased, and after the Austrian king's death in 1504, all their personal unions dissipated, in a large blows to Austrian ambitions.

Several years later, Austria went to war with the Pope again, this time taking Romagna. The Pope, unsurprisingly, was furious, and thus excommunicated Philipp I von Habsburg, King of Austria. Austria's king has thus been excommunicated for probably close to, if not, a decade now, but remains nominally Catholic, as do the vast majority of his subjects.

On the plus side for Austria, Naples was annexed by the AI leadership (and Urbino while still under human leadership). Thus, Austria now has most of Italy as part of Austria proper, with Siena and the Pope remaining independent on the boot. Military Drill was chosen by the Austrian AI as the fourth Austrian idea.

Burgundy conquered Ceylon this session, getting a start in Asia. They also gained at least one more German vassal, Cologne, and both annexed and released Provence. The releasing was (in the eyes of the Ottoman court) done in an attempt to reduce infamy and thereby retain Emperorship; this bid was ultimately unsuccessful, and Bohemia is the current Emperor. However, Bohemia is not nearly as threatening as they used to be, thanks to a war between Bohemia and a Burgundian-Ottoman alliance. This resulted in two provinces being gained by the Ottomans, as well as Poland and the Teutonic Order gaining their independence (in addition to vassal/gold gains for Burgundy). The main mishap for the Burgundians was likely the loss of their fleet, due to being forgotten about, and presumably sinking after many months in the middle of nowhere. At least it happened shortly before Naval Tech 11, so they could rebuild with more modern ships.

The Ottomans directed most of their attention to Horde colonization, with a focus on modern-day Iran. Along with some conquests in southern Russia from the Golden Horde, this was plenty to ensure the Ottomans remained in Overextension for nearly the entire session. The Black Sea became the Ottoman's mare nostrum with the war against Bohemia, in addition to the conquest, in 1506, of Constantinople and Rhodes, thus ending the Eastern Roman Empire after more than two millenia. Edirne remains, however, the capital, as the Ottoman sultans have not been sufficiently good adminstrators to move the capital to Thrace without paying 1000 ducats, which remains a high sum of money for an empire colonizing many lands. Being unable to take this decision, and thus unable to enact Ottoman Tolerance, the Ottomans have instead begun sending out missionaries, as stability costs have become rather a problem within the Ottoman Empire (only a couple years of this session saw the Ottomans have positive stability, and then only at +1).

Castille continued colonization efforts, gaining lands especially in North America and the Caribbean. Though at time it appeared they may enter into conflict with England over partitioning of Inca lands, overall it was a relatively calm session for them. Currently, they are engaged in the Hanseatic Reconquest of Bremen, where they successfully defended Bremen from The Hansa and their ally Mazovia. This war has been lengthy, lasting no fewer than 15 years, but does not appear to have caused significant internal strife in either Castille or Mazovia (The Hansa, on the other hand, has appreciable revolt risks). Superior Seamanship became the fourth Castillian idea, at the direction of the AI.

England no longer exists, as during this session the British Empire was born. Britain continued to expand their colonies this turn, both along the northeast coast of Brazil, and into Incan and Kongolese territories. Of all the human nations, Britain is perhaps the most religiously diverse at this point, but so far they remain staunchly Catholic.

In AI news, Ayutthaya imploded quite thoroughly this session, while Hungary continued to do fairly well, aided by the continued focus of both the Austrians and the Ottomans elsewhere. The Ming dynasty made some territorial gains, but have lost the Mandate of Heaven, and are thus may not keep their gains.
