European Middle Ages Mod Resurrection

Wow, you guys know a lot about this stuff! I was just sort of guessing, :mischief:

Hansa / Tech / Bonus Required / Buildings Required
Hansa Member - Wool / Weaving / Sheep / Port & Guildhall
Hansa Member - Textiles / Weaving / Dye or Cotton / Port & Guildhall
Hansa Member - Foodstuffs / Preservation / Salt or Fish / Port & Grocer
Hansa Member - Shipping / Pilotage / None / Port & Dockyard
Hansa Member - Fur / Guilds / Fur / Port & Guildhall
Hansa Member - Coin / Banking / Silver or Gold / Port & Bank
Hansa Member - Amber / ??? / Amber / Port & Guildhall

What did medieval people use Amber for? (I need help picking the tech!)

Also, if we're going to add a seventh Hansa, I think we should definitely put some worldwide limits on the memberships. If we limit it to 4 of each, there'd be a maximum of 28 memberships world-wide.

Your thoughts? -Laina

Amber is a gemstone and was (still is) used to make jewelry.

I agree with Craig on using Guilds. Makes good sense on several levels.

I would like to suggest removing cotton and replacing it with flax if it doesn't cause any problems. It was grown in the region to make linen.

im learning russian in school, so i could help with that.

@Head Serf

Have you had a look at Fall from Heaven? I don't know anything about python or xml but they are doing some amazing things. Maybe something could be learned by having a look at the code.

I've been doing some experimenting...

I added two new buildings:

Palace obsolete with Claims to Authority

Royal Palace with Claims to Authority, obsolete with Dynastic Houses

Imperial Palace with Dynastic Houses

When I did this, as a player civ, I was able to build the Royal Palace at the requisite tech. The capital did move when I built it in a different city. It also appeared that when the Palace became obsolete, maintanence costs did not increase, but I didn't investigate this much.

There was a problem in that the AI did not build the new palace wonder... only the player did.

Next, I added the Royal Palace as a free building in Civilizationinfo file. This also worked in that the palace obsoleted and the new Royal Palace appeared... however, it always was rebuilt in the Capital, so the capitals did not move as I wished.

Is there any value that I can tweak so that the new Palaces won't necessarily arrive in the Capital, but will instead appear in another city.

Or if I don't make Royal Palaces and Imperial Palaces free buildings in CivilizationInfo, is there a way to influence the Civ to build them.

I'm very unfamiliar with XML so I'm not certain how to tweak this to work or if it's even possible to get the xml files to produce the results I want.

I've been working on trying to learn python the last couple of days, but it's very, very, difficult. The capital changing might be a good idea for a later version when the python work can be done for it. Of course, if you find a good xml solution, that'd work too.

Re: Capital:

Actually, in my experience, the AI almost always moves their capital to the very middle of their territory.

Python is very difficult - I spent a whole weekend once trying to change something in an advisor screen, and never did get it to work. I did manage to add an event to the event manager! But that also took several hours, :)

I agree with Head Serf - we should table it for now.

Hello All !

I think it is time to give the new buildings a try! If anybody would like to help me test them, here they are.

What's Included:
  • New buildings
  • Pedia and strategy text
  • Building buttons, and a few models
  • Added new bonuses: Black Stone and Torah Scrolls (no art)
  • Added new Great Saint builds (Religion-specific Reliquaries and Shrines), Missionaries now require Monasteries
  • Increased per city Nat'l Wonder allotment to 4
  • Decreased base health/happiness in HandicapInfos (hopefully the new buildings offset the decrease.)

What's Not Included:
  • Craig's Religious Building suggestions (I didn't want to get too much into the UnitInfos without Head Serf.)
  • Drtad's Holy Lance Wonder / Buildings

The models are from the graphic forum; I made the buttons. (An art credit for the models is included in the pedia text.)

Here is a list of the files included:
Spoiler :
Assets/XML/Art/Civ4ArtDefines_Bonus.xml
Assets/XML/Art/Civ4ArtDefines_Building.xml
Assets/XML/Buildings/Civ4BuildingClassInfos.xml
Assets/XML/Buildings/Civ4BuildingInfos.xml
Assets/XML/Buildings/Civ4CityLSystem.xml
Assets/XML/Civilizations/Civ4CivilizationInfos.xml
Assets/XML/GameInfo/Civ4HandicapInfo.xml
Assets/XML/Terrain/Civ4BonusInfos.xml
Assets/XML/Text/Civ4GameText_Civilopedia_Buildings.xml
Assets/XML/Text/Civ4GameText_Medieval_Strategy.xml
Assets/XML/Text/Civ4GameText_GameTextInfos_Medieval.xml
Assets/XML/Text/Civ4GameText_GameTextInfos_Medieval_Buildings.xml
Assets/XML/Units/Civ4UnitInfos.xml

If you have modified your files and need the changed code for a particular file, just let me know!

Specifics for testers:
In addition to game play for tech/balance/specialization/cost, please let me know if:
*any strategy text doesn't match a building's effects.
*any pedia, strategy or text entries are missing.
*you don't like any building buttons.
*the global decrease in health/happiness is too much.

Looking forward to your feedback! -Laina

Hello All !

As the buildings reworking is nearing completion, I'd like to volunteer to tackle tech buttons next. I'm about to start working on tech buttons for the other Mod team I'm working with (Alagaesia Mod - here's a link: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=202428), and I may be able to use some buttons for both mods, as that one is also a Medieval era mod (though fantasy rather than historical). I've also already made civic buttons for that mod, some of which might work nicely for this mod. (Assuming nobody here objects to buttons being used in both mods - I know ClassicThunder is ok with it.)

Also, I'd be happy to revisit the soundtrack and incorporate some more diverse period music. I could also work on diplomacy music - I think it was Drtad who suggested packaging some basic music with the next mod release.

If this is acceptable to you guys, let me know. I don't want to step on anybody's toes if someone is already working on these things!

Also, I still have some more ideas from my initial test play. I got sort of carried away with buildings, but just discovered my pencil notes buried here on my desk. I don't want to distract anyone from test-playing the new buildings, so I'll save those yet for a week or so! :)

Yes, I think it would be a good idea to have at least a basic diplomacy music for all of the main scenario leaders. It is a bummer when the diplomacy comes up with Theodora and you can't hear some Greek music, or likewise with the English and French and everyone else.

I think that it is best to keep the music as a seperate download to keep the file size down. People who are willing to download the larger files will download the music add-on and those who don't have a fast enough connection to download the music won't. If we combine them then a lot of people won't download the mod because of its large size. The current music download is 150 mb, and getting diplo music for the main leaders will only expand that even more. The smallest songs average about 1 mb, and with 15-16 leaders, it'll be quite a lot.

EDIT: By the way, I do support adding in the new diplomacy music, as long as it is kept as part of the extra download.

@ lshockley : Glad to hear that you'll do the tech buttons, and I have no problem with using buttons from another mod, so long as they don't have a problem with it.

Also I plan on doing all of the civilization flags and some extras for scenario makers this week. If anyone has any particular ideas or requests, I'd be happy to consider them.

I've also been using sezereth's medieval units pack to create some new models and the like. For instance, I'm changing the spearman from the old Greco-Roman style to a more medieval style. I'll also try to get the UU art finished up.

@lschockley

Alagaesia looks interesting. I received Eragon as an Xmas gift. I may have to bump it up on my reading list.
