As someone who immigrated as a teenager to the United States from an Asian country, I offer a neutral persepctive.
America: The Land of Opportunity
Overall, I can honestly say that the American system (capitalism and republic) is the best system in the world today. America is a land of opportunity. I am an example. I came to the U.S. as penniless refugee. For a while, my family lived in substandard living conditions. However, due to hard work and a strong desire, I recently graduated from Harvard Law School and now work at an international law firm located in New York City making more money than I ever dreamed of. In short, if you have talents and a work ethic, you can be successful in America. I am an example of this. This special quality separates America from 4/5 of the countries in the world. This opportunity is why America attracts a great number of the talented individuals, such as scientists, from around the world.
Foreign policy:
I will concede that American foreign policy has done some ugly things in the past. However, certain people (like the Swede, the Brazilian, or Peace4Me) do not understand that the world is not perfect. You see, the world is of limited resources. This scarcity is often the root of wars and disputes. People want more land, more water, more food, etc. Civ does a great way of bringing this out. In any case, wars have existed throughout history and will continue in the future. Given human nature, peace only occurs through threats of force. I can't even recall a successful civilization which did not have a military.
America is no better and no worse than other countries that look out for their self interests. I venture to say that I want America to look out for the interests of its citizens. Similarly, Brazilians would expect their government to look out for its citizens interests. There is nothing wrong with this. If this doctrine was why America armed the Afghanis during the Cold War, so be it. Every action has a consequence. It's easy to play Monday quarterback.
Islamic Fundamentalism:
Although I am no expert on Middle East policy, I see Islamic Fundamentalism as a real problem today. I don't buy the often-heard reason that it is all about Israel. Granted, Israel is an issue. However, it should be noted that Islamic Fundamentalism has created havoc not just with Jews, but also with Hindus in India. Although not widely reported, there has been incidents of Islamic terrorist activities in Chechnya and China. There were recent bombings in Bali and the Phillipines. In short, it seems that these Islamic crazies not only have problems with Jews, but also with the Christians, Catholics, Hindus, and non-religious Russians and Chinese. So, what is their method of attack, you ask. Their method of attack is terrorist acts, like bombings of churches in Pakistan, bombings of Hindu temples, bombings in China, kidnapping, etc. Is the Israeli issue the cause of ALL these bombings? Or are all these bombings an indication that Islam of today is out of control? The evil acts carried out in the name of Islam today is similar to the evil acts carried out by Europeans during the Crusades in the name of the Church. Islam of today is out of control, just as the Pope's Church during the Crusdades.
