Ever Been Nuked By the AI?

Never been first striked by the ai but once lost to ai by spaceship when i was going for cultural victory so "just to see what happens" reloaded and fired of my entire arsenal of 12 ICBMs and 6 tac nukes to see if i could do anything to stop ai launching. as it turns out you need to destroy or capture the capital of the opposing civ to destroy the spaceship.

As someone who immigrated as a teenager to the United States from an Asian country, I offer a neutral persepctive.

America: The Land of Opportunity
Overall, I can honestly say that the American system (capitalism and republic) is the best system in the world today. America is a land of opportunity. I am an example. I came to the U.S. as penniless refugee. For a while, my family lived in substandard living conditions. However, due to hard work and a strong desire, I recently graduated from Harvard Law School and now work at an international law firm located in New York City making more money than I ever dreamed of. In short, if you have talents and a work ethic, you can be successful in America. I am an example of this. This special quality separates America from 4/5 of the countries in the world. This opportunity is why America attracts a great number of the talented individuals, such as scientists, from around the world.

Foreign policy:
I will concede that American foreign policy has done some ugly things in the past. However, certain people (like the Swede, the Brazilian, or Peace4Me) do not understand that the world is not perfect. You see, the world is of limited resources. This scarcity is often the root of wars and disputes. People want more land, more water, more food, etc. Civ does a great way of bringing this out. In any case, wars have existed throughout history and will continue in the future. Given human nature, peace only occurs through threats of force. I can't even recall a successful civilization which did not have a military.

America is no better and no worse than other countries that look out for their self interests. I venture to say that I want America to look out for the interests of its citizens. Similarly, Brazilians would expect their government to look out for its citizens interests. There is nothing wrong with this. If this doctrine was why America armed the Afghanis during the Cold War, so be it. Every action has a consequence. It's easy to play Monday quarterback.

Islamic Fundamentalism:
Although I am no expert on Middle East policy, I see Islamic Fundamentalism as a real problem today. I don't buy the often-heard reason that it is all about Israel. Granted, Israel is an issue. However, it should be noted that Islamic Fundamentalism has created havoc not just with Jews, but also with Hindus in India. Although not widely reported, there has been incidents of Islamic terrorist activities in Chechnya and China. There were recent bombings in Bali and the Phillipines. In short, it seems that these Islamic crazies not only have problems with Jews, but also with the Christians, Catholics, Hindus, and non-religious Russians and Chinese. So, what is their method of attack, you ask. Their method of attack is terrorist acts, like bombings of churches in Pakistan, bombings of Hindu temples, bombings in China, kidnapping, etc. Is the Israeli issue the cause of ALL these bombings? Or are all these bombings an indication that Islam of today is out of control? The evil acts carried out in the name of Islam today is similar to the evil acts carried out by Europeans during the Crusades in the name of the Church. Islam of today is out of control, just as the Pope's Church during the Crusdades.

I had not even got the techs to build nukes; I never ever build nukes even when I can. I was beating them up badly with conventional forces though. In fact did eliminate them; finally got round to it a couple of minutes ago actually. Was about to do the same to all the other AI when I got a cultural victory. Damm; hearts are good but bandages are better. Score 8000+ (Regent; spaceships disabled).

Edit this was Emperor not Regent.

Right enough bragging I still have no idea about Diety.

this world is filled with all kinds of people, with all kinds of opinions. this is great, BUT there is no need to bring all the uglyness in here.

Ouch, that hurts  I hate those culture victories. What Civ did you play

i'd post screenshots of the ugly mess the egyptians caused in my chinese world but for some reason my computer freezes during uploads. they are paying dearly for that even though i don't have nukes! kleo wants to talk peace but i'm not interested.

Thanks Praetorian.

Me France; AI Germany; Aztecs; English; Iroquois; Japan; Babylonians; Zulu; and Russians. Mistake in last post it was Emperor level not Regent. Been popping that cork too early in the day again.

Richard:

I can't believe how many people here have never been on the receiving end of a first strike. This has happened to me often enough that I often play with a mod that quadruples the price of nukes.

The first time it happened I was totally surprised.

The second time I decided to try out a theory. I made no nukes, thinking perhaps the AI would only use nukes against other nuke carrying countries. Not true. They got first strike again.

The third time I noticed a pattern, which may or may not be true, but it seems to of only happened each time as an action of desperation. When the AI was just getting thwomped by my armies.

That may be more representive of my style of play than an actual pattern. Anyone else find a pattern in first strikes by the AI?

RobOZ:
u may be right about it being an act of desperation. it took the egyptians forever to use their nukes and even though they still have some remaining, they haven't used them again even though i'm steadily approaching their core territory and they are incurring tremendous losses.

Sounds absolutely right. The English nuked my five biggest cities in one turn when I had no nukes but was taking 6/7 cities off them per turn. Seems they could not compete with my production of modern armour and mech infantry so resorted to all the nukes they had already produced. Facing extermination what civ wouldn't I guess. Still wiped them out.

A thing that qualifies as "What is the smartest thing the AI has done to you?" thread. But in one case I was heavily guility of ROP rape and the Egyptains took out my former capital city with their nukes. I retailiated with my own but nobody else used them after that. Why I wonder.

Let's play a game:

Moderator Action: Next off-topic post in here earns a nice, long 1 week ban. Give me a break, this thread is about the AI's use of nukes, not anyone's opinion on any country/religion/race/anything else off topic.

hey roboz,

sounds like a good theory about the ai needing to be desparate, and is even a bit utopian in nature but....

i was playing a game, either on monarch or regent, but likely monarch, wherre i was a mostly isonlationist civ, had about 15-20 cities on one island all to myself.

i had great relations with everyone and there were not many wars in this game, and the only threat i even slightly posed to the babylonians was a city on the southern border of their empire, just north of my island.

this was a really old city, one i started myself.

when, completely out of the blue i see this nuke dropped on my capital city pesepolis. and then i get this message saying the babylonians declared war on me, and then about 5 more nukes were dropped on some more of my cities. this is how i remeber it, maybe the nuke and the declaration of war were actually switched around, but, needless to say, this shoked the s*** out me.

so maybe there is a factor in the ai that determines amount of agression. the babylonians were huge in this game. in most of my games, they hardly ever make it to the modern era, so maybe the babs have been programmed with that higher level of aggression.

If you launch one nuke, the game is ruined, all others launch, you launch, and everyone keeps unsing them until you start new game cause youre sick of waiting trough all the global warming screens...(or is there some way to disable them...?)

I know some people wont belive me but, in more than a year I've never been nuked by AI, really.
and I know they have them, they just havent attacked my that way.
maybe its because the way you are with the AI
In my current game I havent gone ANY war and its 1824 AD
and 3 of the 11 are gracious to me.
May be this game I wont be nuked again!
(I hope so)

Now that is craziness. I have never seen the AI attack with nukes as declaration of war. Were you on bad terms with the Babylonians perviously?

nope, not on bad terms...but i don't remember exactly, this was a game from last spring, wish i would have saved it. it is possible i am forgetting some of the circumstances, but i am about 97% sure every thing i said above is correct.

gugalpm: cuz history profs are the most unbiased people around! HAHAHAHAAHA Our LIBERAL arts universities are just filled with a bunch of america-bashing boneheads. I think you must hate american policy from every generation to be granted tenure.

I've been nuked on a few occasions. Never as a first strike, but I launched 9 in one turn at various civs and had 15 shot at me in the next turn. Thank goodness for the SDI - only one got through. Later on, though, they fired again. I responded with 3 nukes to America's strategic cities, but my capital city was already wasted. Never been hit by a tactical nuke, though. And you know what? You should be able to capture ICBMs. They're like artillery - no attack or defense, just bombardment. It would've been nice to pick up an extra nuke when I burned Paris.
