Ever played Daggerfall?

I played it a bit a long time ago. (i finished the first dungeon and got to the first city)

Are you sure you found all the keys ? I remember spending several hours looking for them ...

Daggerfall sucks compared to morrowind or Oblivion. It has NOT aged well.

IMO, it hasn't really aged at all. It was bad when it first came out, and it's still bad - well, it was still bad as of a couple of years ago when I tried it again. Thought I wouldn't say it's any worse than Morrowind or Oblivion. All are boring... :p

I used to play it several years ago, when i finally had a computer capable of running it. There are a lot of nice features buried in it, but the interface is terrible, even by mid 90s RPG standards. It also crashes a lot and the minimap is nigh useless.
Exploring the gigantic randomly generated dungeons was a lot of fun though. I really missed the random quests and dungeons in the later TES games.

Looking forward to the download. Till, PhroX, Harbringer how does the game play? Does it give more freedom than Morrowind or Oblivion?

I'd say it is much more limited than either Oblivion and Morrowind, if you take into account the mods for either.

Some differences to Morrowind, which i remember off the top off my head:

- An infinite amount of random quests aside from the hardcoded ones
- Horseback riding (like in Oblivion)
- The possibility to become either vampire or werewolf
- Summonable Daedra Princes (and more of them than in later games, i believe)
- Climbing as skill

A majour downside, but an expected one.

Great feature.

Ditto. So is the ability to name horses and feed them (?)

- The possibility to become either vampire or werewolf
Same as in two later games.

Great feature that has more sense than visiting static temples to get a quest from Gods. I wonder if there are any Morrowind mods to that respect.

- Climbing as skill
I thought Sneaking was bad enough.

I wonder how the game is with regard to magic, spells, fixing armour and making items. What about joining guilds and owning houses? Can one have NPC companions? etc.

Its a huge copy and paste offender is the problem. There are infinite quests, and places, and caves and jazz like that, but they are ALL almost the exact same place. It had a charm to it back when it first came out, but nowadays it is just absolutely terrible.

I loved Daggerfall. Huge game, had a lot of flair. It's definitely worth a try, but is rather difficult to get running even on dosbox. You have to copy the cd onto your hard drive and mount it with a tagged command like
Code:
mount d c:\DAGGER_CD\ -t cdrom -ioctl
in dosbox's config file a lot of people want
Code:
memsize=32
...though I don't know whether it's necessary
