How do you get other civs to like you? ive never once managed it, no matter what i do, what wonders i get, they always hostile towards me :(

Which version are you using: MPGE (multiplayer gold) or Classic/2.42? The former is much harder to get decent attitudes towards you.

im using mp gold 1.3 i think

when ever i give them stuff their attitude goes up but then on the next turn it goes down again. even with eiffel tower and united nations everyone is hostile after 2 turns :(

The behavior downgrades are not so bad if you are consistently nice, avoiding any back-stabbing or breaking of treaties. The more powerful you get, though, the more they band together and try to resist you. It's more reasonable if you use Classic/2.42, but I do not know of any downgrade patch.

You can get from Classic to MGE, and then around in a ring MGE-FW-TOT-MGE, but I don't remember a way to get back down to Classic. Please let me know if I am mistaken...

you could just re-install Classic right? uninstall the other (FW, MGE, TOT) and then re-install...

I believe i had done this before...NOT for that reason lol, but I had to fix some stuff like I overwrote files i shouldnt have etc, etc.

You can get to to classic from MGE. I think you use the patches to get to FW, then just apply the original 2.4.2 clasic patch to FW. I could be wrong on the exact process, but I know it can be done.

Actually the FW patch contains a copy of the 2.42 exe in the form of Civ2orig.exe .

What I do is give them all of the gifts and things that I can.
Then they agree to exchange maps, knowlage, all sorts of things. If it goes back down, I give them more. it is quite hard tho.

P.S. to vote on whether or not to give us a new diplomacy option in civi III visit myThread.

In 2.4.2, the AI is hostile, too - if you're the leading civ.
Make allies early (deny to swap techs if you meet a civ the first time, make peace, give the denied tech to the AI civ as a gift, then ask for an alliance. Then ask to swap techs).
My playing style is brutal: I don't need no allies, for I'm the #1 civ in nearly all ny games.
I make peace with my enemies- and bribe their cities the very next turn. I know they will attack me sooner or later.
An if the bribed city has an important wonder ...
So my reputation is always very bad - but I "collect" city after city.
Normally I have celebrating Fundamentalism (Statue of Liberty, Mike's and Bach's - lux rate about 50%, 50% science, no taxes).
Since all my cities have temples, i earn up to 2000 gold a turn - without taxes!

In 2.42, the AI is a pussycat until about AD1000! After that its like an angry kitten compared to MPG. Playing at diety level, in 2.42, you can form alliances with most of the AIs and maintain them for eons. Try that in MPG, and the AI attitude drops to hostile/enraged so fast it will make your head spin!

In 2.42, you can gift an AI civ to Cordial or higher, form an alliance, swap all its techs, swap maps, and get gifts. In MPG, its tough to get more than one or two allies, and they tend to go from enthusiastic to hostile in less than a turn.

If you want civs to like you, stay Mighty. In a game I was playing, I was Mighty and without doing anything, almost everyone was Enthusiastic. I build some cities and WLTPDed a few turns, and they all became sonething like Icy. I play FW by the way.

Try to get to enthusiastic or the next lower attitude by gifts of tech (as mentioned above). Besides improving relations it also helps your tech rate if the ai civ is also the key civ.

Asking to exchange maps frequently is a simple and costless way to keep up the good attitude (of course once both of you have discovered Map Making).

I always get that feeling too, but IIRC someone said the AI was indifferent to map-trading.:(

My impression is that map swapping is favored by Civilized AI civs, but others are indifferent. If you have Marco Polo or UN, the AI will usually swap maps if they are Cordial and your Rep is Spotless; lower Rep requires higher Attitude. If you have an embassy they will swap at Enthusiastic; if you have neither it requires Worshipful attitude. The major difference between Diplomacy in Classic/2.42 and other versions (MGE, FW, TOT) seems to be that the AI attitudes will degrade much more quickly in the latter versions, so you must gift a lot of techs to get to the threshold Attitude for map swapping, which will not stick after even 1 turn.
