It used to be that in this country people were writing literature mostly because they had the false view they had something decent to present. Now it is also true alongside that to have people write as a (unlikely) means of getting some euros.

Anyway, turning and turning in this widening gyre where the maggot loses the maggot-er, others (such as my great self) actually do try to present works of notable literary value, and they evaluate it personally cause they don't trust the plebs running the contests or publishing houses.

So in a half a month the results of two lit contests i decided to take part in will be announced. I have no suicidal ideation and thus am not holding my breath, but it would be a nice development if one of my two excellent stories managed to be printed as a result...

I wanted to ask if, in your view, the chaotic era we are in also happens to bring about some good changes, due to the rising 'community spirit' and popular funded projects which now abound. Although virtually all my printed works are in editions of the 'establishment' (that is itself a euphemism), i am of the opinion that the nepotism of old is eroding due to the internet and more direct ways of getting work out, in all kinds of creation (music, writing, painting, computer game indy programming etc)..

Would a short translation of this be "Should I self-publish?"

If so, I suggest you ask Plotinus. He's done it both ways.

Eh... you seem to be focused on thinking the threads have other topics than they do. Care to explain how you came to the conclusion i was 'asking if i should self-publish?' (why would anyone actually ask that, at any rate?...).

The thread was to highlight damaging nepotism, while presenting myself as a paragon of anti-nepotism due to reasons.

There's nothing shameful about self-publishing. And "popular funded projects" suggest something like Kickstarter.

If you mean something totally different, why not just say so directly instead of the meandering philosophical vagueness?

I don't think we're living in any sort of chaotic era, compared to all the previous eras our civilization has lived through at least.

If your work is good enough (not saying that it is or isn't, I haven't read any of it I don't think), you'd think that nepotism wouldn't apply to you so much.. with the advent of the internet and all. Maybe I'm being naive, but if people out there want to read the type of stuff you're writing, you should be able to reach them without the use of publishing houses you oppose.. Unless your writing only appeals to the Amish or something, they might be harder to reach.

The Amish possibly are a crucial (if not numerically the largest) part of my audience, yes. But i have to accept that if my work was just viewed as crap by other people then i would not have 30 publications in 13 different printed outlets, so i have good reason to suspect the current economic situation as a main cause for the actual book-form deal difficulty :jesus:

I was under the impression that you mostly published your stories in Greece, in the Greek language.

Yes. There are more than 13 printed periodical editions of art/literature here. In fact i think there are over 30 easily (cause many people like to write, although few like to also read- and i am one of them in many ways). Obviously only few of those have a big number of copies for each issue.

@Tolni: I really doubt it. In fact for the 2 i am waiting results from i am pretty certain there is no reward other than a printed edition of the 'winning' stories.

Reminded of Flaubert, who (iirc) had his first work published when he was 38, and in a letter to a friend of his prior to that offered the joke that he might not try to be published 'fast' cause he likes the idea of the old writer who at some day nearing death decides to print his entire body of works ;)

Although i would rather have a book collection soon.

I can sympthatise. Been writing for oh so very long, got one of those...

Link to video.

Felt worthless. Then i got 3 of my writer friends who HAVE been published tell me i SHOULD keep trying. I can't earn $ by writing in Latvian anyway. I will continue my efforts in Queen Elizabeth's language for Shakespear's sake :D
